If I were in the market to do this and got a quote of $16-18K just for refacing, which I think is nuts, I'd rip everything out and start over with brand new.  That said, I'm not interested in sinking that kind of money into my kitchen.  Our cabinets haven't fallen off the walls yet and I have some pretty heavy dishes in some of them.  I've become such a fan of the paint Rethunk Junk by Laura that sometime soon I'll be painting my kitchen cabinets for probably under $100, maybe another $100 or so if we change out the hardware too.
