Sheer idiocy:  just imagine a child trying to deal with going up / down these stairs...or your grandparents...or you.

Yes, a trip to the emergency room or a lengthy stay in a rehab / nursing home if you are lucky, or a permanent good bye.

Now add to that picture: trying to escape a fire situation.

Hope that staircase doesn't lead to the one and only  upstairs bathroom! There's no way I could hurry, which is an occasional life situation at my age,  and more than one kind of accident could occur right on those steps...
