Two areas that catch my eye when looking at interiors.

I love the mud rooms with the hooks for coats and baskets for gloves and scarves, it's all very neat and tidy. The little book nooks, some in little seat areas and some under the steps, I just look and look at those and take it all in.

Do any of you look at books on interiors? Is House Beautiful the best or Interior decorating books the best? Or what do you like to look at?

I was just paging through a Cottage Living while at Lowe's yesterday.

Only takes me a few seconds to get ideas from the pages.

What discouraged me from buying the magazine was, they don't have an index in the back telling you who and where the furnishings, etc can be purchased.

Saw a chair I really liked, I think I found one similar on my all time favorite site though.

QualityGal, me too!   I do like "House Beautiful".   I like the way they pick different paint colors each month to discuss and analyze.  "Verandah" has gorgeous photography, and they haven't hiked the price (as yet).  "Architectural Digest" ditto, but they can be a bit homogenized and generic in featuring endless rather bland expensive interiors.  Not always though-- sometimes they surprise me.

"Elle Decor" has murkier photography, but they will feature quirkier interiors and their articles tend to be interesting reading.

My favorite decorating books have been:

The Englishwoman's House   edited by Alvilde Lees-Milne   Everything from tiny bohemian cottages to great manors owned by hereditary aristocrats

Mid-Century Modern     by Cara Greenberg    Written by extremely knowledgeable baby boomer who, like me, loves the best of Forties and Fifties design

The House and Garden Book of Romantic Rooms    Self-explanatory!

Mark Hampton on Decorating       by the late designer Mark Hampton, famous New York anglophile, and illustrated by his own charming drawings and paintings

My favorite design style is sort of romantic industrial Belgian farmhouse classic", ha!

I like laundry rooms with a long table, bench or cabinet for folding things.  I like a tub in the garage for bathing animals.  I like screened in porches.  I like three closets in the master bedroom: one for her summer things, and one for her winter things, one for her shoes.  I'd love to be able to hose down the kitchen including the inside of the fridge.

As I look through home plans, I linger over mud/laundry rooms and fireplaces.  I've discovered I like kitchen sinks placed under a window looking out to the yard, just like our farmhouse had.

We are going to have a mud room in the new house. My dad will finish it once we are moved in.

Color catches my eye. This afternoon we were looking at model homes at a new development and I can still tell you exactly what colors each home featured.

My favorite had a medium tone grey cabinets on top and white on the bottom and island then a navy blue guartz countertops. The DR & LR were decorated with pale grey wood floors , white walls and all various shades of blues in furniture and art work and window treatments and rugs. It was so pretty. The kitchen backsplash was a herringbone pattern grey tile.

That sounds really pretty. My mom is doing a smokey gray herringbone backsplash at the new house.
