Towels are feeling rough - any suggestions to soften them up??

My towels are starting to feel rough and scratchy to the touch.  I use fragrance free liquid laundry soap and no softeners, as I have extremely sensitive skin and can't handle any of these products.  I use the little dryer balls with the nodules on them instead.  Anyone know why this is happening --- or what I can safely use to soften them up???  Thanks for your suggestions!!!

Once in a while, add a little white vinegar in with your detergent.  I have a washer with an extra large load option and I use 1/8 cup every once in a while and it seems to help.  It helps remove soap buildup which can make towels a little scratchy.  I never smell vinegar on my towels after they are dried.  If you do, they just need a 2nd rinse and cut back on how much you use next time.

I also use vinegar.  I use it on every load I wash.

White vinegar in the final rinse!

I went back to dryer sheets, I missed the soft smells and softness of them.  I know they say that sheets clog up the vents of the dryer filter, but a little of this and a little of that, and you make the choice.

I found putting them through an extra rinse cycle once in a while did the trick.  My totally unfounded theory was that there was a build up of detergent in the fibers.  At first I used the extra rinse cycle each time I did a wash, and when I finally got the towels to the softness I wanted, I switched to only doing the extra rinse every other time.

Agreeing with at least a cup of  white vinegar for the rinse cycle.
