Re: Top of fireplace decor?

[ Edited ]

@Marybella       Well my  more descriptive post went away but I would decorate it with seasonal items, like I treat my fireplace mantel.

Right now, candles and some gourds/pumpkins.

An easy, quick fix would be seasonal garland with small battery operated lights (if there is no outlet).  It would be pretty at night and give off a nice soft light.  The garland would not interfere with the view from either side of the mantle.  I think once you decorate for fall, the other seasons will come more naturally.  I decorate my mantle for every season, it's the focal point of my family room.

I agree with one large artistic piece that you love but it would block your art work so that might need to be moved.  I would avoid anything cutesy and fake flowers though I often like a well designed dried arrangement if it is gorgeous.

@Marybella  Such a beautiful fireplace. Okay, just bear with me lol....how about a large size fake bonsai? Just that one piece would make a nice statement. Amazon has pages of them. They come in colors too. Just put "fake bonsai" in the search bar there. A large one would be needed for that space. Not a wimpy one.Woman LOL

I don't know what part of the country you live in, so this maybe or maybe not work, a big fake cactus. Just one. You can get one even 3 feet tall. Or the round cushion type. No watering or fuss. Amazon again has pages. "Fake cactus" in search bar.

As a few here have stated, I like the idea of one magnificent piece of art work. Like a sculpture. One hurricane might be nice with a candle that lights up on a timer. Or a real candle that smells nice and a string of battery operated tiny twinkle lights.

Keeping it plain has it's simplicity too.

When you decide, I hope you post a picture.

After the Salvation Army gets your things, I'd live with it for a while with nothing on it and see what you think.  You might like it that way for the reasons others have mentioned.  If not, you can then decide what to do with it.

Thanks, everyone, for your helpful suggestions! I will be bringing a load of items to the S. A. on Monday. I will try the idea of just leaving it blank while I contemplate what to do with it. I like a lot of the ideas you shared. Thanks!

I have a mantle over a fireplace, now, in the apartment I moved into in March--never had one before but I decorate it according to the season----had a narrow sofa table behind a sofa in my house, that I did the same thing to. Looked really good but now my decors are in storage. I brought a few basic pieces with me but need to fill in with some small things as I find them.

I love your fireplace, and the lakeview from the large window.  I like the suggestion of doing something seasonal.  Something for Fall/Winter and something for Spring/Summer.

Maybe a fairly tall lantern that you can decorate the inside with - battery operated tiny lights strands and some seasonal something or rothers to put inside.  I would check out pinterest for ideas.  Some people have such a knack for decor.

The fireplace is so pretty it doesn't need much adornment to detract from it.  Even a beautiful glass bowl or decorative tray.
