Yes, these tiny homes are not for everyone, but they are so expensive for what you get. I am use to small homes. I had 5 brothers and sisters in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath house. 3 kids per room, 2 in bunk beds and 1 in a bed, that was the set up. But we had a closet and dresser. Not much closet space at all in the homes I've seen. Oh well whatever works.

And these things are grossly overpriced - you can get a really nice camper trailer - larger and much better equiped for half the price. We live in a camper all summer every year when we snowbird to Pa. Ours is in it's third year old. King size bed, AC and furnace. 16 gallon hot water heater Fully equiped kitchen - 4 burner stove, full house size fridge, microwave big enough for a sofa and 2 recliner chairs, and a table and 4 chairs. Large shower. 8ft wide hanging closet - tons of storage. 400 sq ft and it only cost us $45,000 brand new. Plus we are equipped with tanks to hold fresh water and waste water should we want to travel with this camper - we don't but we could. No way those tiny houses can compare.
That is one huge microwave.

@Kachina624 wrote:@Desertdi Are you having rain today, Di? We are having that rarity, a cloudy, overcast day. It's a rare treat. Had a brief thunderstorm late yesterday afternoon. So far, nothing today.
@Kachina624 Hi.......we had 17 hundredths around 7 this morning. High temp was only 87°. I think the southern part of Maricopa county got a lot more rain (judging from what I saw on the news.) The "tropical storm" was a big dud where I live.....di

I so want to downsize and move into or build a tiny house. DH & I watched in the last week or so a tiny house show where the house was 600 sq ft. It was gorgeous! I could so (or could have) live in one this size but not in one 200-300-350 - too small I think.

I actualy spent many years living in a 12x50' mobile home before I bought my condo many years ago. That would be less than 600 sq ft since they include the trailor tongue when then measure the 50 feet. It had 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, kitchen and living room. It would be fine for 2 or 3 people.......5 would be a big stretch, but you could buy one of those (used) for just a few thousand dollars, or even new for much less than one of those tiny houses.

I feel sorry for the kids and teenagers being forced into something the parents want to do for "togetherness" and family time.
Take away the cell phones, computers and video games you bought them and I'm sure that would provide many hours of family time.
Big deal that they make sure the kids have their own space, the total lack of privacy except for the bathroom would send me over the edge. Sometimes you just need to close a door to get away from it all.

I'm sure they have no choice.
Many elderly folks in my area have been living in "tiny homes" for years.
When my grandmother could no longer live by herself, her son (my uncle) built her a tiny house in his backyard. He lived on 2 lots anyway.
This was back in the 1960s. I thought it was a great idea, I loved the little house.
Open concept kitchen, dining, LR, plus 2 BR & a bathroom, all on one floor. I don't know the square footage but I'd guess maybe 400-500..
I've seen many families do this.
A camper or trailer here in tornado alley would not be safe.
And a tiny house - heck even a regular house - is not safe in a toronado.

I guess it is just TV but what ever happened to just a normal size house? It seems for years all we saw were McMansions - now with our inflated economy they have become passe and we have to go to the opposite extreme. What is wrong with a nice 3 bedroom home around 1200 sq ft. ? 1 1/2 baths?? My parents raised a family in a home exactly like this and we never felt we were deprived in any way at all.

I really don't like the tiny houses. Just looking at them makes my claustrophobia act up.
A dear friend of mine just brought a mobile home in Florida.
Very, very much cheaper than those tiny homes, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen & living room. It is a small home, but quite livable.
