Think we need a new water softener !

Anybody purchase one of those new Culligan efficient water softener? We are remodeling bathroom, and our water softener isn't doing the job. We have a salesman coming on Tuesday to test our water and discuss our needs. This is necessary, but not one of those fun purchases. It seems like one project turns into more.

PS: Its old, probably 16-18 yrs.

I loved when we lived in Pa and had a water softener - ours was 28 years old when we moved. Now my DH says we don't have room for one in the garage. Our water is terrible. We do have a small filter but it is not enough.

When they're done tell them thank you for the estimate and we'll take it to Home Depot and compare.

Do you have a softener from Home Depot? We need a good one, since our water is pretty red.

We just replaced our Culligan (too expensive) with one from Sears. Our Sears one does more than the Culligan one.Check out other brands. I found that the Culligan didn't last as long as I thought it should for the price.

Re: Think we need a new water softener !

We just replaced our old (at least 30 yrs.) softener that stopped working 6 mo. ago. That company was no longer in business so my husband researched. He settled on a Water Boss from Home Depot. It was less than 500.00.

He could has installed it (comes with a DVD) but a friend of our son is a plumber and he did it. He said he has installed several of that model and they work really well.

Forgot to add it uses the least amount of salt and water when recharging. Our old one went through salt quickly and took hours to recharge.

Re: Think we need a new water softener !

We purchased a Whirlpool from Lowe's and paid extra for them to install. It works perfectly. It was around $500 for the softener only.

I researched a lot before purchasing and learned that water softeners all work basically the same and it's not a complicated machine.

The real expensive one's usually have commissions to pay the salesman and it will really add to the cost.

Put your recharge schedule on demand, not a set cycle. You may need an iron filter and an inline sediment filter if you really have that much iron. But don't panic yet.
