They say things always happen in threes, and that seems to be true for me most of the time. A couple of weeks ago my air conditioning went out. My heat pump was 20 years old, and I needed a new one, so that was the first thing.
I always wait until I have a list of things for the handyman to do, and then I call. The bottom of my guest bathroom vanity has completely collapsed. I needed the drawer put back on the railing, but the handyman couldn't do that because the vanity was pulled away from the wall by a couple of inches. I knew it was happening but didn't realize how bad it was. I am now getting a new vanity, mirror and light fixture for that bathroom.
My dryer has not been drying clothes as well as it should, so I wanted to get the hose cleaned out to see if that could be the problem before I bought a new dryer. The handyman showed me that the hose had never been installed properly in the first place. There's just a big hole in the wall where the hose is stuffed in behind the dryer. I have probably bought two dryers since I've lived here, and no one has ever told me that before.
Having all this work done will be at least a full day's work.
Before all this happened I decided to reupholster my bedroom chair and the bench at the foot of my bed. I'm on the upholsterer's schedule and have bought the fabric.
I'm frustrated and am now putting myself on a spending freeze. I'll be happy with everything when it's done, but it's stressful spending all this money at one time when it wasn't planned.

Isn't that the way! I feel your pain as we've had that happen in the past as well.
Regarding your AC unit, do you have central air? You may find it more financially easier to consider getting the Mitsubishi Split Systems - air & heat. We purchased one about 4 yrs ago & use this most of the time. Honestly, it doesn't get the whole house, but does the open livingroom, kitchen & bathroom. Maybe it's something you want to check into?
I hope the projects turn out as you hope.
The $$ issue is always a problem when it's not planned. Good move on putting yourself on a spending freeze. Good luck.

I hear ya. True for me, but with my car this time instead of the house.
My car has been running great since last summer, Just needed oil and wiper blade changes. End of July: four new tires. This week: front and rear brakes and repair an oil leak. Total for all the above: just over $3000.00. About right, I guess as it's coming up on 100k miles around the end of the year.

While I wouldn't want to be a renter in a typical apartment complex, home ownership can be expensive. Glad you have a good handyman. Think how nice it will be when it's done.

@NickNack When it rains it pours....hoping this is all the work that needs to be done for a long while.

@sceniccoast Yes, I have central air. I have already had the new heat pump installed. I've never heard anything about the Mitsubishi Split System. I have a very small house, though, so it was probably not anymore expensive to buy the unit I bought. Thank you for the suggestion.

@queendiva I'm sorry about your car. It's hard to spend that much on a car with 100,000 miles on it I"m sure.

@NickNack : mine is a "luxury" SUV that I hope to have for many more years. My auto tech is a master tech on this brand. The 2004 loaner car that he lent me had over 275K miles on the engine and the transmissions on this brand are known to hold up as well.
As long as the car is reliable and maintenance is less than payments on a replacement I hope to keep it. The coming year should only include oil & filter changes and new spark plugs.
