If I was going for a more "professorial" look, I would remove all the "stuff" off the mantle and coffee table.  Then I would add book cases ceiling height on either side of the fireplace.  I would place maybe some native art and plants on the coffee table.  The mirror would be replaced with art.

I love this! It can be dressed up a bit if you wanted, or it can be dressed down definitely for more casual........
