I have this same dish, and I love it!  I collect "bird" related items, and this is one of my favorite pieces!

I had a white swan.  My nephew asked my sister to buy it for me, he said it reminded him of me.

How sweet is that?  He was 8 or 9 at the time.

Not a fan of trinket dishes in general, although I have seen some beautiful old ones in the past.

To me it is a catchall for things that should be put away in their proper places.

I bought this from the Q (Robert Lee Morris) years ago.  I actually have it standing on it's edge so you can see the inlaid flowers.  I use it more like a decorative accent.

I do like trinket dishes and love the ones at Anthropologie.  I only have one, though, that I picked up at my father's house when my sister and I were cleaning it out last year to sell it.  It is Belleek, and I thought it was pretty.  I don't have anything in it.  It was even hard to find a place for it.  I like putting my jeweley in a jewelry box at the end of the day.

If you want to make your own, here is a project from JoAnn.

How To Make Doily Bowls

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1-Doily any size
  • 1-Bottle of acrylic paint
  • 1-Medium paint brush
  • 1-Bottle of fabric stiffener
  • 1-Small paper cup
  • Plastic wrap
  • 1-Small plastic or glass bowl the size that you would like your doily bowl to be
  • 1-Piece of old cardboard or plastic bag

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Mix the acrylic paint and about ¼” cup of fabric stiffener.
  2. Lay the doily onto the cardboard or plastic bag and brush the mixture onto both sides of the doily until completely covered.
  3. Lay the doily onto the plastic wrap bowl and let it dry overnight.
  4. Peel the bowl off the plastic wrapped bowl once it is dry.
