The Shoji Screen: Yay or Nay?

I used to see a lot of Shoji screens in decor, used as room dividers or doors.

Takayama in Gifu, Japani love the soji screen. They are so beautiful!

Japanese Interiors-14-1 Kindesign Shoji screens are still used to reinforce traditional decor but places that were once held by shoji screens have been replaced with permanent walls.

There are many applications of screens and different "interpretations" of the Shoji screen.

I like the concept.  Not sure if I like the material.

A relative used those, many years ago.  They are very nice.

Privacy, with light, and a novel sense of enclosure.

You say Shoji screen, I say barn door.  Woman LOL  Either way, used in the proper setting, I like them.

@lolakimono - I taught in Japan, so I love all of this. I get that peaceful feeling just looking at it. We have a lot of oriental influences in our home. We do have a screen like this in our living room, but we don't use it as a divider. It is gold leaf on one side and reverses to plain. We also have a gold-leaf screen on the wall over our sofa.

This one is similar, but of course, I think ours is much prettier! The panels are a little higher and wider too. If I ever figure out how to put pictures from my phone on here I'll take a picture of it!  Smiley Happy

Yes, if it complements the simplicity of the room.  @lolakimono  Are you redecorating?  Thanks for all the beautiful inspiration.

Re: The Shoji Screen: Yay or Nay?

Hi, @lolakimono!

Yay to shoji screens!

Almost a year ago, I moved into a very vertical condo. Since it's so lofty, it gives the illusion of being bigger than it actually is, & the floor to ceiling windows sold me. I love light & airiness.

BUT, because of those windows. privacy at night became an issue. The upstairs rooms have large 'windows' (cutouts) which overlook the LR & there's also 'catwalk' along the upstairs hallway.

I wracked my brain trying to come up w/ a solution. Plantation shutters were far too expensive, as was enclosing the upper rooms.

I finally came up w/ the idea of using shoji screens, & love them!

Mine are white and allow the light to come through, but give total privacy.

I also bought an 8-panel screen to place along the catwalk at night.

Thumbs way up for shoji screens!  Smiley Happy

@phoenixbrd

No- just "home" for the summer, resting until the impetigo clears, and trying to stay out of the sun.

I have a plumbing "situation" and so tomorrow, for example, I'll be held captive from 8-12 waiting on my "window" for the appointment.

I'm trying to find things that people can discuss, without being acrimonious or repeating topics that have already been dissected ad nauseam.  Mostly I watch the "murder" shows, but most of those topics, including cold cases, would be poofed in a New York minute.

My Dad made me one out of pine to hide the toilet in my bedroom. My cats first put their claws through the paper which could have been fixed. But they also thought the pine was a wonderful scratching post. As my parents always said" Can't have anything nice with these dam kids."

@lolakimono - I'm so sorry about your impetigo. I had it on my chin during college and the doctor just gave me ointment, which hurt and didn't seem to do much. I hope you feel better.

You do such a great job of keeping us entertained with fashion and home and other things, and it's fun to discuss everything! Today, when you have brought us so many oriental themes, you have taken me back to Japan and the peaceful, zen influences there. Thank you for all you do!
