The problem with getting glass is you probably would not get a piece of glass as large as the whole - fully expanded table so when you do need to put the leaves in for a large dinner you would still need pads to protect the table from spills or hot dishes. My table came with the custom pads included in the price, including the ones for the leaves. However, I would still prefer to have a glass top as well so I could get rid of the tablecloths and not have to worry about scratching the table. I hate having the stupid tablecloth on the table every day.

I look at it this way, when the wood gets some signs of use, it means you have had wonderful times around it, sitting there with friends and family and enjoying the table. A few marks make the table happy!

We are on our second dining table now, and the first one had a few battle scars which didn't bother me. We chose not to have the pads because we didn't like the way they looked and they were too expensive. I just use extra sheets or another tablecloth under the top one or place mats and trivets on bare wood and have never really had any big issues. When I'm cleaning out the bar and china cabinet, I put beach towels over the table and use it to stack and even sometimes wash the classes as they are taken out and cleaned.

The kitchen table I recently bought was made with dings in it so it has the rustic feel even before we put our dings in it.
