TWO LIVING ROOMS, CALIFORNA AND NEW YORK

First, one that could be called "soft modern".   Or, it's alternately called, "vintage-modern",  or maybe "organic modern".   It isn't "cold",  like some modern and contemporary interiors can strike one.

"Lone Fox" is an adventurous do-it-yourselfer, who uses his eye as a professional photographer to distill his signature look in his apartment.

He ALWAYS mixes vintage with modern and transitional pieces, which to me, give the needed character and interest.

I love the way he did this on the right of the image below.  He combined his antique gilt framed small paintings and small marble topped table, with his large framed photo of the misty Oregon coast.  (Personal note-- I have that same photo print-- it's from Target, oh yes!  In real life, it has an almost sepia tone, and blends beautifully with older pieces.)

Beautiful throw on that leather couch:

In progress.  His makeover started with the fireplace.  It was painted the same warm white as the walls, but he wanted more contrast in the room.  Painting it Sherwin Williams "Tricorn Black" instantly helped "pull out" the existing black window trim.

I love his pottery.

His mantel shows how he brings "old school" charm to the room.  He thrifted the painting/print for $10 dollars.  The vase was inexpensive, a bright color that he changed to an "aged" effect, and he also enhanced the patina on the candlesticks.  Even something as small as the color of the candles-- he could have gone neutral, but that soft, mauvey pink is so perfect in the vignette!

The guy is so clever.  "Architectural Digest" asked him to take a standard Ikea bookcase, and transform it into his own aesthetic.  He came up with this curving, slatted look:

I think it's a super enhancement to his living room.

His style, while not mine, is youthful and inventive.  Those yummy leather couches also give warmth.  He has a disciplined color palette--  brown, warm white, black, and although you can't see well in these pictures, little touches of navy in the rug and sofa pillows.

The second living room is a beautiful example of McGrath II, whose interiors I've posted here before.  This one is in a Brooklyn Heights brownstone.  Is Brooklyn Heights sort of north of Brooklyn proper?  ( "Patty and Cathy Lane" of "The Patty Duke Show" lived there...)

Such a cozy, English country house vibe.

A delightful room, with the advantage of all the architectural details of an old house.

And here's a little peek they gave of a corner of the dining room-- still, geared for comfort:

While strikingly different, it's interesting how both the apartment living room and the brownstone living room (at vastly different budget levels) used vintage art to give such soul to the rooms.

Both rooms are nice ... but being a west coast girl and having a vacation house on the Oregon coast, the west coast room is more my style. Comfortable, relaxing, warm and inviting. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Not really feeling either of them, but both are reasonably nice. Despite some nods to a more eclectic look, his is still too modern for me, and the Brooklyn place seems to be missing something I can't quite define, though part of it probably has to do with all that white paint.

Both are beautiful. That pink couch caught my eye. One of my daughters would love that!

I choose #2.  Lots more color and looks more homey.

@Oznell - I love that Oregon coast print that you also have - who would have thought Target!!  I like the black window trim, but not the black fireplace.  I do love what he did with the IKEA bookcase - what a difference.

Since I'm a Brooklyn girl, I love the brownstone!  Looks so cozy.  The $10 print is very similar to one my aunt had over her sofa years ago.   Brooklyn Heights (Patty and Cathy) is what we would call "downtown" Brooklyn.  It's a beautiful area and those brownstones sell for a few million dollars easily,

Thanks for posting the photos.

Both locations are absolutely beautiful and so visually rich!

I LOVE the black windows in that apartment of "LF".

So many treasures I could reach out and chose a few items!

Funny @Oznell, I remember when you bought that picture at target! I prefer the first room. Comfortable and cozy.

They both have some nice features.  My pick would be the west coast living room with a little more color and/or prints thrown in.  It's too neutral for me.  I LOVE the architecture of the brownstone but am not feeling most of the furnishings/

What I appreciate about these spaces is the light and that they are more comfortable than pretentious.

These are livable homes.  I can picture people using these rooms and inviting others into them.

A home should be comfortable.
