They are selling potted sunflowers at the grocery store for $5 and I was wondering if I got some and planted them would they come back next spring? Or are they a one season plant? They would be gorgeous in front of our camper in large pots, so when we look out our bay window they would be there.

One season.  I have grown all types, and none have returned, so they are annuals.  If you grow the giant, it will produce sunflower seeds for the birds, and I suppose you could plant some of those seeds to see if they would grow, don't really know.

You can buy sunflower seeds anywhere seeds are sold and plant them in your pots in the spring. Harvest the seeds in the fall for next year's crop. I do this with marigolds too.

I love sunflowers, but I have never had luck growing them!  I think the squirrels and/or birds eat the seeds!Smiley Sad

I'm in South Florida and I plant sunflowers in my veggie garden each summer when its too hot to grow any food.  Right now I must have 2 dozen stalks and they are really beautiful.  I am attracting lots of bees with them too to harvest the pollen.  Glad to see the bees around.

Here is what the 'Giant' sunflower looked like while it was growing...before it set seeds (look in the corner of our backyard). The following week I cut the sunflower head off because it was really drooping...very heavy from the seeds and tied it up for feathered and furry critters to enjoy as you can see in the previous pic Smiley Happy
