Squirrels haven't ever damaged our house, but FWIW we recently added metal grid wire panels behind each gable vent to help keep all critters out of the attic.  The house was built in the 1950s and only had screen over one of the vents. 

I suppose the squirrels here are content with the abundance of trees, and we are also surrounded by woods.
