Unless your clothes are DIRTY, like car mechanic dirty, you don't need much detergent.
The detergent I use is for dark clothing. I haven't been turning the garment inside out BUT I will from now on.
And yes the pants were cotton.

I will start and turn the pants inside out. I figure the beating the pants got yesterday with all the different clothes brushes and 3 rinse cycles, the pants need a break.

I always add 1/4 cup baking soda to my laundry. It is supposed to:

I use Brooke & Nora liquid laundry soap. Also sold under the Beekman Happy Place brand at HSN. I use vinegar to rinse. No residue even in towels. The darks stay dark. For a regular size load, I never use more than 1 tablespoon. Using the amount of soap Tide and other brands recommend, it's way overkill. If clothes are really dirty and/or stinky, add some baking soda to the wash cycle.

When I first got our new top loading he washer and 1 had the same problem until I got use to only using a small amount of he detergent. I use all free clear he detergent. Once I started using the small amount of detergent I wash full loads of laundry. Color
Ed ,White, towels and even king size comforters. How long have you had the he washer? Good luck.

It has been probably going on 3 years ago I got the HE washer. But guess I am a slow learner. I still was using the lines in the cap of the detergent to determine how much detergent to put in each load.
If it was a full load I filled the cap to the top line. The detergent said HE and the washer was HE. Or I would just pour the detergent until I made a 360 degree circle on the clothes.
Apparently I have been using too much detergent. We are retired and my son works in an office. So our clothes are not that dirty. I am going to use less detergent. I also have 2 bottles of All free and clear in addition to about every other brand of detergent.
I also told my son to fill to the top line on the cap. Boy oh Boy guess I will cut down on my detergent consumption.

I believe with HE washers the detergent should go in first.

@drizzellla .................A couple of things popped to mind.
Do you use a liquid fabric softener? The residue could be from that if you do.
Using to much laundry soap.
A new washer that uses very low water amount.
If its a low water washer try a setting that fills the tub. I mostly use the "bulky setting" on my washer because it fills the tub with water.
Rinse the black pants putting vinegar in the rinse, that should take care of any residue.
