Skunk Odor -- HELP!!!

[ Edited ]

I put this under "home" because I didn't think any other topic applied.  I ran over a dead skunk this morning ... I didn't kill it, it was freshly killed and in the middle of the lane.  While I didn't hit it again, just passed over it, the smell was hideous and made me nauseated and left me with a headache all day.  I continued on to work.  When I left work and got in my car,the smell was awful.  I had a bad experience years ago and it left me with a horrible memory.  Long story short, the smell of a skunk makes me sick, even if it is coming from a distance.

Any idea how I can get rid of the smell inside my car?  I just went and checked it and it's still inside.  Can't smell it from the outside though.

Buy a spray bottle of Febreze. Neutralizes everything.

Spray the upholstery and floor, mats or carpets. Also spray the headliner if it’s fabric. Open windows and sunroof for ventilation for a few hours. Don’t park where sun heats up the car. Might need two sessions of spraying, a few hours apart.

Car wash pros will do the same with Febreze, so save your money, unless the smell is too horrid and you want them to tackle it.

Don’t hang up any of those deodorizer things. It will just add a cloying smell to the skunk aroma. Yuck.

Good luck.

Try Odor Ban from Sam's Club.

I had a skunk odor in my house once when one came in as I was letting my cat in.  It "sprayed" my laundry room.  I stayed up all night mopping with first vinegar and then put baking soda down over that and as it dried, I would mop with vinegar and then reapply baking soda.  It was gone by daylight.

There was a time you could buy Massengil douche powders and that would eliminate the smell of a skunk.  I tried buying it that afternoon when that happened and could not find it.  I have no idea where you can get it, but if you could that would work.  Your car dealer might be able to fumigate your car for you.

That is a horrible smell.  It triggers my asthma and makes my breathing difficult.

Buy a cheap bag of charcoal briquettes and put them on newspaper in the rear floorboard and trunk of your car; charcoal absorbs odors.

I sympathize with you.  Have never had one spray my car or house but we have skunks in town and there are nights where the smell has awoken us from a deep sleep and made us sick to our stomachs.  I have asthma also and it sure can do a number on me. It's so bad I swear it's in our bedroom!  When we get up in the morning there isn't a trace of the smell. I don't understand how it dissipates so fast.

Thanks for all those suggestions.  I can't leave windows open tonight because its raining.  I have such a migraine.  I finally forced myself to go out to the store and got one of those sm tubs of odor absorbing stuff.  I put it on the floor of the car.  Hopefully it will help and will be better by morning.  Thanks again.

Spray zero odor in your car. Works for all odors. Encapsulates the odor molecules and you no longer smell the odor.
