I couldn't care less about granite or stone.  Let the next owner do it if that's what they want.  I'll stick with my very nice looking laminate.

I think your sister is a smart woman.

My kitchen has formica.  It looks good and wears well.

The newer Formica looks just like granite or quarts and not porous  so more sanitary, if it matters to you. Mine looks like quarts with a fancy edge. No one has said any different.

Formica is nothing like it use to be, I want soapstone but can't afford it so I'm going with a Formica that looks just like it. I have a textured white Formica now that's from the late 80's... can't wait.

A few years ago when we redid our kitchen I went with quartz, it does not stain like granite, do not have to reseal. But if in the future I ever do another kitchen it would probably be formica like wilsonart. The quart is pretty expensive, I could have done formica for about half of the cost.. I say go with what you are comfortable with considering budget, lifestyle etc. There are still a lot of people going with laminate, it will not neccesarily effect her ability to sell the house.

My home is Tuscan in style...I have gorgeous tile. Did not even realize Formica still existed.

Who do you think you are trying to tell your sister what she needs?

My house has 28 year old Formica.  In grey!  So it has been on trend lately.

It looks really good for its age, and care is minimal.  I have no plans to replace it.  Nor the vinyl flooring.  The view out the kitchen window is amazing, though.

I don't like stone countertops.  They make me feel like I'm in a cave.  Around where I live, though, they are very popular.  Just not a priority for me.
