To me the space does need something to finish it. To keep the monochromatic look I would at least add something within the framed portion (with the same tone) that has texture, like a weaving or carving or a white piece of pottery on the mantle. I like the clean look; my bedroom as the same color pairing.

Anyhow - I think something needs to be hung in the small panel right over the fireplace

to keep the eye down some while enhancing the fireplace with something of interest.

It looks  kind of sterile. I would like to see some plants on the mantle piece and some large plants in pots on the floors near the windows. Otherwise, I like the room.

It definitely needs something - it's too bland for my taste. Then again, I'm also not a fan of two-story high rooms, so that may also be influencing my opinion. My great room has a 12-foot high ceiling, and even that's too high for me!

I like the furnishings in the room but the mantle is blah.  I would add a mirror or some bold piece of artwork to give some personality to the space.  It's too white for my taste.

@lolakimono , I would love to fill that space.  I would have a painting in the first panel of large granite rocks.  In the second panel I would place something like a maritime scene.  Over that I would place metal art with birds.  I have a similar scene in the stairway to my walkout basement.  It is a very tall vertical space that can take a multi layered look.  Three different art pieces, all local.  LM
