We received a utility bill today. The statement date is only three days old, so it was not hung up in the mail system. As I scheduled payment, I noticed the due date is only eleven days away, with late payment fees beginning in twelve days.
Fortunately this is not an issue for us, but I cannot help but think of the people for whom this could present a challenge. It feels like an unfair business practice.
Has this been going on all along and I've been oblivious?

The same thing happened to my utility bill last year.

I've had two water bills due in the same month. I can't figure out how they decide when to send out bills. I called and complained and they adjusted the due date on bill #2.

I've noticed this same kind of thing for years with a couple of my bills. They barely give you time to write the check and get it back in the mail.
I think they should give you a minimum of 21 days to get the bill paid, after they mail it out.
Many people get paid monthly, or every other week. Yes, one should be expecting their bills as they do arrive on a cycle, but giving people less than two weeks to have it paid and mailed back could easily be a hardship, especially during things like we've seen the last couple of weeks.

I believe there is a method to their madness. They want you to go to electronic payments, something I will never do, instead of writing a check.
You also have to be vigilant to where payment is sent. This month it might just go to the next State and then you might notice next month payment might be several States away.![]()

This happens with my utilities bills. People have no time to make a payment. They give extensions here, but computer generated.

@cuddles Why not?

I pay all of my bills electronically. I feel safer doing that than to have a check lost in the mail and someone gets hold of my checking account info.

I have never had a problem with a check, or money order getting to their bill destination on time.

@deeva Pay however it's comfortable for you, but even if you pay electronically "they" have access to your account information because they draw the money from your account.
