I am watching a home improvement show and of course they are putting up a shiplap wall.

Whenever I see this 'feature' I think of my grandmother who recently passed who said

"that looks like cheap wood paneling turned side-ways and painted white!"

I can not get that out of my head!!!  LOL

Is shiplap the wood paneling of our time?

only if Chip & Joanna from Fixer Upper are renovating your home! I used to love this show but every home is the same - shiplap everywhere, same design & decor in almost every home.

Its just painted "old wood"  like paneling of years gone by that everyone painted at some point - I know I did in our very first home every room had some form of  paneling!!😮

No - just Joanna, she seems to love it.  I don't really think Chip is that into it though I remember seeing a show once when he said something about it and rolled his eyes LOL

We were married in 1969 when panelling and shag carpeting were both the hottest decorating trends. DH thought both were "cool." I avoided them like the plague when househunting and decorating. As we bought and sold homes across the US, he was amazed I was able to sell each home without a Realtor . . . and always within one week!

He never fully understood it was the "good bones" and classic decor that sold those homes. Our homes were tastefully decorated, clean and move-in ready.

Save your time and money. Shiplap is another fad in decorating: here today and gone tomorrow. Give me classic or clean and contempory. Frankly, I couldn't stand the messy look of Joanne Gaines projects or the "surprise" costly repairs that should have been found during the homes' inspections. Never felt Chip and Joanna were completely honest and/or legal in their practices with the buyers.

Money screams; wealth whispers.

Joanna from Fixer Upper made it popular and I love the look.  Wood paneling is ugly unless you end up painting it white or cream and then it's still questionable. lol

Shiplap, oversized clocks, subway tile, granite countertops and the carpenter who makes only dining tables that seat 25.

She always has the late niter when husband and the babies stop by her project house.

No, for the older homes in Waco, TX maybe.

I just don't see it as a trend anywhere else

It just looks like the outside of the house, on the inside. I don't "get" that look. To each their own.

My son constructed a bar in his basement. He did the natural shilap behind it. He got the natural colored shiplap in shades of grey, blue, white. It looks stunning! We have never, nor has my son, ever seen the show "Fixer Upper" so I don't know about Johanna being the person that brought shiplap to being "popular". I doubt it.
