I got a great Singer from HSN! Good price, as well! Now, if I only knew how to sew...😉

Re: Sewing Machines?

[ Edited ]

My Mom & Grandma made beautiful drapes on grandmas old singer treddle machine  that grandpa had motorized. You do not have to have a industrial machine.

Depending on your budget, you can find good machines online. They are practically foolproof these days (I used to struggle with my machines years ago and learned to fix them but now they are quite rugged and the bobbins almost never tangle.)

I like Janomes best. I feel their bobbin design is the most secure. The "Magnolia" or the DC series (Decor) are absolutely able to handle heavy fabrics and do curtains, duvets and pillows.

The Brothers aren't bad but just not as good, in my opinion. You have to go with something better than the ones from Walmart but they can be good.

Singer is now owned by SVP (SINGER VIKING PFAFF) and all made in China. They aren't all that special. I miss Pfaff (had one in Germany made in the town I lived in) but Pfaff was sold to this consortium and is just like all the others now.

If I was serious, I'd buy a Janome electronic machine like the DC series--you'll spend in the four hundred range. (DC2012 or other DC series) If price is no object, the Horizon QCP is great because it has more room under the arm for rolls of fabric when doing large items. But it costs 4,000

You might want to check out Overstock.com. They have a huge selection at unbeatable prices. Some are factory serviced (display models from stores typically) but you save a fortune and can get a really powerful, fully featured machine for a small price.

25 years ago I wanted a Singer 20 stitch and was able to find a reconditioned one that had been traded in on a very expensive machine. Anyway - my DH bought ****** for me and it was only about $50. It has it's quirks I won't kid you - but I know how to get it to perform beautifully after all these years. I never understand what everyone has against Singer, I love mine, we understand each other. Sometimes when I watch HSN and they are presenting those fabncy machines I am certainly interested, but I just can't justify spending money on one when the singer I have works just fine.
