Self-Cleaning the Oven

My roomie messed up my oven when he made biscuits - tons of stains and sticky. I have a GE self-cleaning oven but never used this feature. I googled info about it - and read that it would take at least 3 hours. Have any of you done this --- was it a messy job - and how does the oven look afterward.
