Same sq. ft. Smaller special purpose spaces or large open plan?

If you were building from the ground up and could build a designated amount of square feet do you prefer:

1. More small special purpose areas or

2, Large multi-purpose spaces?

I would prefer more smaller special purpose spaces. My entertaining is small groups. Very few family members.

I would like a sperate office, sperate craftroom, small libaray, etc.
