Review for Duraflame Lantern Quartz heaters

V34275

http://www.qvc.com/Duraflame-Lantern-Style-Infrared-Quartz-Heater.product.V34275.html?upsh=1&sc=V342...

I know we have some lantern fans here, and when these were first presented, I was so tempted, but had a couple of reservations. So here is what I think after receiving them. Full disclosure, I'm a Duraflame junkie!

I bought bronze and cream. I intended the cream to be for my mom for Christmas. The bronze is not like the oil rubbed bronze of some lanterns, but is a solid color throughout, which more resembles brown, actually. Not a bad thing, just lacks that dimension. I can be funny about 'cream' and 'ivory' as they can all be different colors. The cream is simply beautiful, and my only regret is I didn't get a cream for me too.

These are well packed and arrived safe and perfect. They are large (pay attention to measurements) and I think very sturdy, solid and substantial.

One of my concerns was about whether or not you could get into the candle area, at least for cleaning. The lantern top does have screws underneath and it is very easy to get into the lantern for cleaning, and I think to decorate with some filler if you like. I didn't feel enough heat inside to think there would be any safety issue in doing so, and I will be definitely decorating inside for various seasons.

The candles are plastic, but don't look too bad. They are permanently attached and run on electric like the heater. There is a concern that if the candle dies, there doesn't seem to be a way to remove it.The candle can be on steady or flickering, with three brightness levels on each of those choices.

The one thing that I find odd, is the angle that they placed the candle. I would have chosen to have it facing straight up front and forward. But they set it at an angle facing somewhat left. Watch the video or look at the pics, and it shows it exactly as it arrives. No moving it (I tried) to face forward. I find this mildly annoying, but not enough to send back. The candle is mounted in the center of the lantern floor, though, so it isn't sitting off side or anything like that.

The heat functions are pretty much standard to other Duraflame products, but the remote works slightly different than others I have, just something new to learn, not any problem.

I find this great for lantern lovers. I find it great because if you have no place to store a heater off season, this looks good enough to just stay out and part of your decor (you can use the candle without the heater function, so could be used even in the warm months).  A nice small footprint for those that don't have room for a bigger stove style heater, or don't like the look of those. I think these could easily look 'natural' in a groping with some of the Luminara lanterns that Q has sold over time.

The major drawback, in my opinion, is the cost. They definitely aren't cheap. They do have the newer and 'better' quartz heaters in them, so that helps add to the cost.

I'm wondering if this will be a 'one and done' style for Duraflame, or is they will be popular enough to come out with additional styles over time.

I don't have a need for a portable heater but almost bought one during the presentation.  They are cool looking.

The question I'd have is how much heat does this put out.  The bigger Duraflame fireplace/heaters really don't do much so how effective is a lantern?

I bought one to give for Christmas and paid $133 with free shipping and no sales tax. It was another sad example if QVC not offering a competitive total price on something.

According to the vendor, it heats the same as their larger quartz heaters, I think it is 6 degrees for a 1000sq foot room. Their original heaters were 6 degrees for a 400 sq foot room.

In my experience if you run these for hours on end, they heat up way more than 6 degrees, and at certain time of the year are the only heat I need in some areas of the house to be comfortable.

So far, the lantern seems to put out as much heat as any of my bigger units. I was skeptical too, but it seems to be working as they said. He even made a point to say it is the exact same heating system/unit they put in the bigger quartz stoves. Still max 25 cents an hour according to the presentations too.

Where did you get yours? I looked other places but I didn't find the color selection Q has, or the three month return policy. I like that to be sure it will last (although I haven't had issues with other Duraflame products).

Re: Review for Duraflame Lantern Quartz heaters

I'm thinking they will continue the lantern style for a while at least.  There is already an indoor/outdoor version as well as another that is more modern in design - both available here on QVC.

I really like the look, but have no need for another lantern or heater.  Slightly tempted with the indoor/outdoor version for out on my deck, but don't think I'd get enough use out of it to justify the cost.

I saw those @Buck-i-Nana, and I guess I don't get an outdoor heater! At least not one that is electric, and being tied to electric power sources and cords. I suppose some may have a use for such things, but in our neck of the woods, it would be a fire pit of some kind, or a more portable unit with propane or something.

I did search these and found a 'fancier' looking version (I forget where now) so maybe there will be a series of these, and I hate to admit it, but if these perform well, I'll probably be on board for others.

@Mominohio

wayfair. I bought it as a gift fir someone and the dark, sort of " oiled bronze" finish was perfect. No, they did not have the color selection, which is always a plus on the q. I knew this elderly aunt would like the look and appreciate the warmth from a compact heater. I bought mother a duraflame fireplace insert four years ago, and she has never had a problem with it. Once again, it was a product I saw on QVC but I checked for local dealers and walked into a store and picked it up for $99 , which at the time was a big savings off the QVC price, yes I saved on shipping.
