@JasoninBoston

Glad you have had no problems with your SubZero.  We have had so many, mit is unbelievable.  Have spent over $3000 in repairs and it still freezes above the ceiling of the bottom mount freezer.  It is a dumb engineering issue.

We make ice cubes one day and then bag them until we need to make them again.

We we need a new fridge but everything I read and see is a turn off.  That old Kelvinator we got with the house 45 years ago is probably still going strong.  We gave it away when we put in the new kitchen 1995-96.

You hit the nail on the head!  It really doesn't matter anymore what you buy.  I have a Samsung french door refrigerator that I inherited when we bought our house 3 1/2 years ago.  I've had several things break on it since we've had it - I just replaced the ice maker (again) for $246 and told myself that if anything breaks again that we're getting rid of it.  After doing lots of research about new refrigerators, I've come to the conclusion that it really doesn't matter what brand you buy anymore because they're all basically garbage.  I see many people of this thread recommending Maytag or Kitchenaid or GE because they've had them for 10 or 15 years with no problems.  But the problem is, you can't even begin to compare a 15 year old Maytag fridge to a brand new Maytag.  They just aren't made the same anymore.  I asked my repairman recently when he came to replace my ice maker recently, what brand he'd buy.  He said if you could find a used Sub Zero, it might be something to consider because, I guess, they're fixable.  Only problem is, Sub Zero only makes built-in fridges.

I have a GE french door. After a few years, it started leaking water under the vegetable and fruit trays. Then, the water would freeze to sheets of ice. I called out our repairman. He couldn't fix it. He did tell me that GE has samsung parts and he seemed to think that was the trouble. I dont know.

My husband emailed several people at GE and never heard back.

I ended up having the water line disconnected and I just buy ice now, we already had a water filter on our faucet.

I'm not sure what my next brand will be, but it won't be a ge and I don't think I'm gonna get a fancy fridge with bells and whistles. Its just more stuff that can go wrong.

Good Luck, I hope whatever you get you have better luck than I have had with this thing, @gidgetgh

@happycat  I have a GE Monogram, and it also leaks, also causes two bottom shelves of freezer to stick, so DH chips off the ice every Sunday, it doesn't leak now during the week, but if he skips a Sunday, it does. right onto the floor, so I am going to mention your post, and hopefully it will work for us.  We can always buy ice as we did for our previous very old frig.  GE used to be so good, had a frig for twenty-five years, no problems, and washer and dryer, the same.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

@mousiegirl, girl, I can so relate to your husband. Of course it was always me chipping the ice and I didn't do it on a consistant basis. There were times there would be a thick, probalby at least half inch layer of ice under those trays. I was chipping away with the meat mallet, then trying to pry it out, and a big sheet of ice would fall on the floor. Its dangerous, you and your hubby be careful.

I have had ge appliances in the past too, with no problem. This is ridiculous. I would hate to be the CEO of a company that is so crappy and treats the consumers liket his.

If you google much about it at all, there are lots of folks like us with the same problem with GE refrigerators.

I've thought of a new one, but honestly, I don't know what to get. My inlaws had so much trouble with new

Samsung and Maytag applieances in the last few years, its not even funny.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

I always read threads about appliances because mine are 12 years old.  I think my fridge (Kenmore Elite) and my HE washing machine (same brand) will be the first to go.  I have a Bosch dual fuel range and dishwasher and have never had an issue with them.

I keep hoping someone is going to post with a message about the holy grail of appliances but nothing so far lol.

I remember one person posting here who’s relative was an appliance repair person.  He said GE stood for ‘generally expensive’ so GE never got on my list.  My appliance repair guy is someone I know and he says they are all basically the same now that so many companies have been bought out.

I think I am going to go to Costco next time.  I don’t want a fancy fridge.  Too many things to go wrong.  My neighbor has one that sends a photo of the contents.  I laughed when I heard that.  Then I saw the appliance repair truck there last week.  Oh my.  LM

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

A couple of years ago, my neighbor's refrigerator stopped working. She called a repairman - and she never removed all the dust that collected underneath for 15 yrs. I use a long, slim bristle brush (Lowes has them) to remove dust under my refrigerator, stove, washer/dryer.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

We have had horrible luck with GE and Samsung.

I think people that have any appliance over 8-9 years old, the appliance is still going strong.  The last 5 years or so, they have gone downhill tremendously.

It's a crying shame manufacturers are making such an expensive shoddy product.  Thirty or even more years ago a reliable appliance was made and it lasted a long time.

Now, it's just horrible.  Something needs to be done about it.

I have one of those that I put in my dryer vent. Its unreal the lint that I can get out of it.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Our current refrigerator seems seems to be happier today so we’re keeping an eye on it.

We did stop at Home Depot and looked around, avoiding LG and Samsung. The Kitchen Aid was really nice (they only had one model) but it was $1,000 higher than most of the others.

We found a Whirlpool that we liked.  I took a picture of the tag so I’d remember which one it was. It was on sale.

Side by sides, like we have now, seem to be just about obsolete. They had only one or two on the floor. So we concentrated at looking at French door with the freezer on the bottom.

I doubt that we’ll voluntarily buy a new refrigerator. We’ll wait till our current one dies, which I thought was going to be yesterday.

@gidgetgh

Our Whirlpool basic white, no frills side-by-side was purchased when we moved into this house in 1995.  We can't find anything similar and that's a problem because a new one has to be able to fit in a tricky space.

I DON'T WANT WATER IN THE DOOR!!!!!!!

Yet that seems to be what they're forcing us to buy.  If we have no other choice, I'll do it, but I refuse to have it hooked up.
