Ridiculous. Today, just because they CAN put a computer chip in some item that communicates with a phone, they DO. Even if it makes NO sense.
I can't wait for the "Wipe your Behind" App,,,that "communicates" with your toilet roll, which will automatically dispense the "correct" number of highly scented squares ..SO innovative!!!! No need to think about it!!!
....don't laugh...the Lume nether-odor people are probably working on it!!!
It's like I always say...(when people bray that something is thier "right"),,,,you have the RIGHT to pick your nose up to the third knuckle while parked waiting for the light to turn green... doesn't mean you SHOULD.
That is a feature I will never use, ever, much less understand the need for.
Fortunately, with all the so called "improvements" made since your grandmotherly piece, my BRAIN still works and I don't need a stupid phone to tell my when the "warsh" is done!!!
And Horrors!!!!.....living here in rural PA, I hang warsh out on the warsh line to dry!!!!
The sheets and towels come in smelling like NO chemical laden stuff could make them smell in a million years!!!
And, I like the physical act of hanging laundry outside....It may only take a few moments, but there's something calming about it.
And yes I realize there are places where one cannot do that, (hang warsh) but here we can thank goodness!!!
thanks for the look back!!!
love to hang my wash out on a sunny day, sheets feel so fabulous

I'm nearly 67 and am somewhat familiar with this old time practice of warshing clothes.
Mom and both grandmothers had wringer washers, but farm grandpa's overalls and railroad grandpa's overalls/coveralls were boiled in galvanized tubs over fires in the back yard. Mom drew water from the well outside, heated it on our cook stove to add to the washer and to fill the rinse tubs.
I was in 2nd grade when indoor plumbing was put in our house. Farm grandparents got theirs around the same time, but I was about 12 before my other grandparents got indoor plumbing, but they were the first to have a washer and dryer. My mother did not get hers until the 80's.
I appreciate all of my modern appliances, but would much rather cook and bake with my electric stove over a wood fired cook stove!

@Othereeeen My GE also has that feature...I'll never use it either. BUT, because the "done" signal on this washer is so very faint, even though turned up as loud as possible, I do use the timer on my smart phone so I'll know when the wash is ready for the dryer!

happy to not have to go to a laundromat! and not handwash dishes!
when we lived in southern florida as little kids we rented a backyard cottage and the neighbor's Mamaw used to wash towels and bedding in big tubs and spread them out on the palmetto shrubs to dry. i was about 4 at the time. they had a beautiful 2 story home and a long sidewalk down the back where the Dad had set up a play village for the kids. i played with her grand-daughters and went over there for family pancake breakfasts on Saturdays with all the grandparents, cousins, aunts...etc. now come to think of it she cooked the pancakes too!

How I envy you @Othereeeen hanging your clothes outside. We live in a "community" where clothes lines are not allowed. Love living here and some of the "rules" work for me, but I still miss my clothes line. To be honest, if it's a very nice and sunny day, I'll drape my sheets over the patio chairs and let them dry. One neighbor is able to see, but she's such a doll, it doesn't bother her. No neighbor on the other side so I'm good to go. SHHHHH, don't tell anyone.

@coffee drinker Hanging clothes out is one household chore I didn't mind at all.
I would fold things as I took them down and put them in the basket just to be outside longer.
Of course there was always that pop up shower and I'd make a mad dash to get them down. At 72 my mad dash days are long gone. lol

@CrazyKittyLvr2 We sound like twins. I also enjoyed hanging out clothes and folding as I reeled them in. At almost 77, I may not "mad dash" as in the past but happy I can remember those days.

@coffee drinker DH would even join me in taking clothes down and folding them. We had a lot of good talks over the clothes basket.
