I like to keep it neutral and add color other ways.  My kitchen is in the cream family and I have plates from pier 1 with pears on them hanging on the wall.  They are various shades of red/orange.  I have a serving platter from the line on my island.  It adds a pop of color.  I have a sliding door in the kitchen and the sage curtains add another layer of color.
