Yes, I've both free handed with an angled chiseled paint brush or that tool above  and they both work well.

Taping was always far more work and it never produced a consistent perfect edge. I always had bleed through that needed going over anyway when I tried it.  So no to taping, in my opinion....just a big ole mess!

I don't tape ceilings, either.

I have a high quality, 2" angled paint brush that I've had for ages.

I will tape baseboards, door frames, window frames and ceiling fixtures.

Re: Question for you decorators

I think painting the walls and ceiling the same color is a great idea especially a light color.  Go for it!

Re: Question for you decorators

@bmorechick Interesting discussion.  My ceilings are white.  Why not try the smallest room in one colour and see how you like it?  If you do, keep going.  If not, you can change the process to suit your preference.

Good luck.

Re: Question for you decorators

When I painted two bedrooms a few years ago, I painted the ceilings and walls the same color.  One bedroom is a pale oatmeal color with a turquoise accent wall; the other, a mixture of leftover paints (kinda looks greige) with a sweet rosie brown accent wall.  Anyways, you can't tell the ceilings are the same color as the walls.

Re: Question for you decorators

I have seen both ways and like both but when I do mine I do the ceiling and walls the same.  For one it is easier for me to do and also makes the rooms look bigger.  I am not the greatest painter and I get more on me than the wall I think.  I do clean up good and cover it all before hand.

I need to paint a couple rooms this year but just hate to start.  I'm trying to decide on color as well.

My house is easy. All walls and ceilings are white.

This is the best brush to get a crisp line between ceiling and wall, IMO.  I never use bright white paint on my ceilings.  It's too stark.  I've never painted a room all one color before.
