Question for you decorators

[ Edited ]

So home decorating is definitely not my thing. I know what I like, but my house is far from magazine quality because I just don't have that decorating knack...my sister got that gene šŸ˜‰

It will soon be time to paint my upstairs bedrooms.  There are five, but we will only be painting 3 of them.  I want to paint them all the same color...a very very light grey...it's almost white but not really -you can see the grey undertones.  My question is, we loathe doing the taping between ceiling and wall.  It's so time consuming and my husband and I always do these projects on our own.  With a color that light, would anyone consider painting the ceiling the same color as the wall?

@bmorechick  In my opinion, no I would not paint the ceiling the same color. Even if the grey is very, very light...the bright white ceiling always looks more crisp (white), and it makes the room more polished.

Re: Question for you decorators

I wouldn't paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, nor would I paint all three bedrooms the same color.  I'm not saying there's anything wrong with doing that - - it just wouldn't be my preference.

Re: Question for you decorators

Not a decorator, but worked with many throughout the years. I always paint the walls and ceiling the same color, if you google that question you can read  many articles by decorators saying that they prefer it as it is a seamless look. In the end it is a matter of choice. I also have every bedroom painted the same white. I always thought it was a good background for pictures and mirrors on the walls.

@bmorechick

Agree that the rooms would look better with white ceilings, and I think it's great you're keeping it cohesive and painting all the bedrooms the same color.

Yes Yes and Yes to same color on walls & ceilings!!!!

I do all the painting in our family and I just recently started doing this in our lower ceiling-ed daylight basement and it actually makes the ceiling seem taller (optical illusion) and boy is it a lot easier!

Type this in the google search bar, interesting post about this topic:

THIS PAINT TRICK WILL MAKE YOUR ROOM LOOK BIGGER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS

Re: Question for you decorators

Also, here's an example of a light grey room. It just depends on the look you're going for but painting the ceiling the same color does make a room look bigger and ceilings look taller and so much easier.

It really works.

Paint one room and paint the ceiling the same color.  Can't be that bad can it?  If you don't like it, go with white in the other two.

They will all have different furniture and bedding--don't think it will be a big deal either say.

Why do you need tape where the wall meets the ceiling?

That's necessary.  My husband paints all of are rooms every few years.

He uses a paint pad.  You can paint and keep clean edges.  He used tooling my parent's home over 50 years ago like this, so it isn't new.

Here is what it looks like.  It's almost impossible to make a mess with this thing.  You will paing like a pro...because this is what the pros use.

Re: Question for you decorators

Painting a clean edge is always a bit more challenging w/ rooms that have no moldings, & a nice trim brush is a must.

Taping is such a pain in the neck, so I never do it, and just free hand it.

If you're not comfortable w/ that, then use one of the tools like @Carmie showed you.

But I've gotta say, it's when you're actually painting that you see the imperfection(s). Once all your stuff is back in the room, you'll never notice them again!

I vote for white ceilings too!
