I like them stacked and would probably leave them that way. Perhaps set a candle or a potted cactus in the top section.

Add one of those stackable Russian Dolls on top...

That is really a cool find.
Here is what came to my mind.
Except for the bottom dish, invert the rest of them, with decorative
upright spacers and transform it into a pagoda.

I think they are really pretty. They look very sturdy. However, I can never think of what to do w/stuff like that. Good luck and let us see pics when you're done.

Those are really nice.
When I first see them I imagine polished stones in the top and maybe around sides.
But if separated, all kinds of things you could do.
They look like they are not for food with the laquer?

Sand them down and spray paint with a shiney (gloss) black paint. Use at least three thin, very even coats (drying completely between each coat).
Place throughout your home to hold jewelry, guest soaps, small toothpastes w/toothbrushes, wrapped candies, assorted nuts & a nut cracker, etc.
When not in use, stack them up as decor!

What material are they made of? Kind of looks like wood, kind of looks like lacquered bamboo, or maybe porcelain? How heavy are they?
I couldn't guess or suggest how to use them unless I know more about them.
Materials and weight affect the practicality of some usage ideas. No fair asking for ideas with so little info, just a photo.

You asked how we would "transform" them.
First impression...style is late 1700's with an oriental flare.
I wouldn't "transform" them. I think they are lovely stacked and wouldn't do a thing that would detract from their character. From their condition, they are not very old, but for me, it would still be like refinishing antiques.
Would help to know the dimensions. At Christmas, though, if the top tray is large enough, a wide candle with a candle ring. Valerie had a few that would drape over the sides of the trays.
Definitely would not paint them.
Again, other than using a candle, I wouldn't do anything; however, I think you will end up using your own creative idea. Looking forward to see what you decide.

They are made of laquered wood. The biggest tray measures 14x14x3 inches and the smallest tray 6.5x6.5x2 inches.
That's all the information that I had when I bid on them, photos and dimensions.
