I always try to wash with the dirty outside side.  My socks have never been dirty on the inside.

As to what triggered it:

A bunch of parents, grandparents sitting around when a new parent mentioned how their baby socks would shrink when washed or they would lose one. This started a joke about how socks go to the "hose zone" when washing. Then someone mentioned how disgusting it was that their ex-DIL washed their grandsons socks without turning them inside out. Others said that was stupid, why did it matter and then the podiatrist in the group (knew she was a doctor but didn't know she was a podiatrist) said "you're not cleaning the area correctly if you're not washing them inside out. How could anyone NOT realize this?!"

And they were off!!

I've noticed a distinct difference on the INSIDE of the sock when they are washed outside out vs inside out, especially with teen athletes in the house. I now wash them inside out because I noticed that when I didn't, they still felt and looked dirty on the inside. Odd because I thought soap and water would go THROUGH the socks and clean both sides so it didn't matter- guess I was wrong as per the doc. I wanted to see if I was the only one who really didn't know there was a difference.

DH's socks get washed inside out because that's how he puts them in the hamper.  After years of turning them right side out to wash, I just quit doing it.  I wash and fold, and he gets socks back in the same condition he put them in (inside out).  As someone else said, he might be wearing them that way.  But at this point I honestly don't care lol.

No I don't. I figure they get the dirtiest the normal way, so I leave them that way when washing!

i allways wash socks outside out. but a couple years ago i bought a package of dockers black regular socks. i have never had socks that shed like they did. my wife hated them. we have a light colored rug in bedroom and there was black lint everywhere. i even emailed dockers about it. they were no help. they just told me to learn how to wash them. so i would wash them inside out. i eailed them back and told them thanks for  your lousy attitude and i will not buy anything of your again.

Uh oh @Spurt, I think this photo will open up a whole new can of worms.  Do you stuff your socks into each other (like the pic) or fold them?  Hahaha  (I fold mine)
