It's a fresh minimalistic room. Really pretty. My guess about a picture is they just wanted the outdoor view and nature to be the artwork. I really like this one.

Firstly, I love the windows just as they are. Secondly, it is kind of spartan, but I think the issue is more of the predictable furniture placement than the desire to be a minimalist. Thirdly, I think addressing the fireplace and the wall above it would be a gigantic step in the right direction.
Another furniture placement option would be to flank a chair on each side of the fireplace (angled), and face the couch to the fireplace. Turning the rug might be necessary.

Minimalists.

I agree with @godi that remote control blinds are needed.
To add softness, I'd get a couch with covered legs and an attractive coffee table. The table behind the couch would be pulled out and put on the other side of that partition to tie the two spaces together. (It's probably a dining area.).
I'd put an interesting table between the chairs.
Over the fireplace, I'd remove the sconces and add a beautiful painting of mountains or a scene with native flowers to create unity with the outside.
The dining set would need to have some visual interest, either in wood back chairs or statement upholstery.

My sister would love that room. She's a minimalist. Me? I'm a maximumalist.

Depends on location of the house and direction the windows face.
If the windows are south facing, I would leave them bare too.
My house is a rectangle, the long side facing my back yard is south facing, I have big windows. I do have coverings because I live in a neighborhood but they stay open all day.
I love having a bright view from sunrise to sunset.
The space above the fireplace is awkward.
I'm a bit of a minimalist but that space begs for something.
Maybe a wrought iron looking open work scroll piece, compass or something similar
I love the room

I'd paint the walls and put up plantation shutters on the lower (3/4) portion of the windows. The Sofa needs a couple of end tables with wrought iron lamps and an end table with a lamp between the two chairs as well. I'd probably add a tall plant in one of the corners by the fireplace and also an art piece or metal sculpture hanging above the fireplace.

The windows and view seem to be the focal point. I would paint the all the window trim in a pretty color that would reflect nature. Greens, blues, or light grey. Even a warmer shade of white would look nice. That would add color and depth to the room without adding any stuff. Fireplace area needs some type of artwork.

This room looks unfinished to me. I don’t understand leaving the area over the fireplace bare. Some window coverings would help warm up the room. The area to the right looks empty. Maybe they’re not finished yet? Maybe they just moved in? Maybe they just like sparse furnishings? What do you think?
I’m not loving the furniture choices or colors either. The views are nice & the rug is ok. I love the windows, floor, & architecture.
imo this room is not very functional as it is. needs a table between the chairs, (where am i going to set my bevmo?)
larger coffee table, rug with some color. good bye to the sconces over mantle. needs something with some color over mantle. way to blah for me. love the amount of light in here, but if it gets any direct sun, could be hot. how about some greenery!

I love the idea of curtain-less windows, but it is not very practical for most of us. You'd be in a fishbowl, unless you have a massive property.
