Painting paneling

We have a bedroom in our downstairs that has paneling on the walls. It's in good shape but I am soooooooooooooooooo tired of the dark wood paneling. I want to paint it this winter and maybe start actually using that room for something other than storage. My question, should I just paint the paneling as is or should I take the extra time and fill in and sand each groove first so it is flat.
