Painting Faux Wood Kitchen Cabinets ?

My DN(iece) just moved into her first apartment. The kitchen cabinets are a faux wood and kind of ugly and dreary. Rather than spend the money to even reface, I was wondering if anyone has had the experience of painting kitchen cabinets, especially a faux wood. What type of paint, procedure, etc. TIA!!! Smile
