yes, i lost a cat in downtown NYC, if you can believe it. i was just moving in, had the cat in the carrier and its door was loose. when i pulled it out of the car, poof, door open/cat freaked and gone. i walked around the neighboring blocks for days shaking a box of Meow Mix, calling her name.. people thought i was nutz. one evening i heard her meow (she was Siamese) which came from the basement of an abandoned building. i went in - it was flooded there. went back and got some big garbage bags, came back, waded to her and brought her home. one of the best days of my life. how lucky. but cats do like to hide out in quiet, dark abandoned spots. keep looking.

Be sure to check with local shelters.....and do not believe what their computers are telling them/you....check every cage and room in the facility.....take charge, call his/her name....insist upon checking every corner of the facility.....this is very important....even shelters that you think would be too far away.

Lots of people post on Craig's List when their pet goes missing. It's worth a shot if your kitty doesn't come back soon. I'll say a prayer for you. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat but please do not give up hope. I've worked for years in the veterinary field and have heard lots of stories of cats returning home weeks or months later. One of our clients found her cat two years after it disappeared. She pulled into her driveway one day and the cat was sitting at the front door. Quite often cats will get locked in someone's garage.

One of our veterinarians used to always say…never give up on a cat.

I'll say a prayer that you find your kitty soon.

Please don't loose hope yet. Years ago, our 13 year old cat slipped through my feet at while I was coming in the door one night. She was missing for a full week. She was a tiny little thing - weighed 6 pounds at her heaviest. After a full week, she returned. She was very hungry but she was completely fine. We took her to the vet the next morning who put her on vitamins and gave her an IV of fluids but other than this - completely fine.

Don't loose hope. We were devastated and on the day she returned, I was coming to terms with the fact that we had lost her. Late that evening I asked my husband to close the garage door - we had been leaving it open a few inches in case she returned. He opened the door and there she was.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

My friend's cat was missing for three months. She put a lost cat flyer with Abby's picture on it all over her subdivision and the neighboring subdivision. Someone had found the cat and kept her in the house. They finally saw the posted flyer and called the phone number. Cat came home fat and happy.

Hi Colliemom3, There is a thread on the "Pet Lovers" board called "Our 11 year old baby cat still missing for 32 days now" (towards the bottom of the first page). It is filled with lots of good advice and encouragement, much like you are finding on this board, but thought you might find some more info there if you scanned through it.

My best advice when a cat goes missing is to a) leave out your kitty's favorite food as late or as early as you can to attract him back and b) go out at 2-3 a.m. and start calling for your kitty, walk around the neighborhood a little calling his name. Sometimes they will come to you when it is quiet or you will hear a familiar meow. And like others have said, notify your neighbors to check garages and sheds.

Good luck to you - I hope you are reunited soon with your precious furbaby.

My cat was missing for about a week last year......when he came in he smelled all musty, as if he was in a basement or damp place. I think he either got trapped in someone's basement or garage or they put him there. He didn't look any worse for wear when he found his way home....so, I think someone had him.

I hope you find your kitty. Keep calling shelters and rescue groups in your area.....also post picture of him of FB. I see "happy ending" stories about lost pets all the time on FB. Did you put signs out of your neighborhood? Cats can stray far.

Good luck.....and please keep us posted.

PS.....what's his name? I will pray to St. Francis of Assisi tonite to guide your furbaby home.
