Our furnace is in the garage in the front of the house, the living room and bedroom are in the rear of the house. Since we don't have basements here in Florida the furnace ducts run through the attic crawl space. It has been cold here (cold for us) for a few days now and for the first time in a few years we have the furnace on.However, if we are in the bed or sitting in our living room, when the furnace blower comes on the air that is in the ducts has to come out first and OMG - it is so cold and it blows right on you because the ducts are in the ceiling, not on the floor like up north. We spent most of this afternoon up on the ladder trying to turn the direction of the vent louvers so this really cold air isn't blowing directly on any of the chairs or the bed.Gosh it's brutal to be sitting here and POW - an icy blast from the ceiling that lasts several min. i definitely much prefer the way it is up north where the ducts can be in a basement and the vents are on the floor.

Thats the way all the houses in the Southwest are built, with ducts in the attic. I never noticed any blast of cold air though, probably because my furnace is smack dab right in the middle of the house in a closet. Now I know why.

I've noticed that too that cold air or maybe just room temperature air will blow out of the registers first before the heat does. When you are cold it is very uncomfortable and feels cold even when it is probably just room temperature since the a/c is not on. I think all registers should be on the floor. Want to add: Obviously if the room air temperature is cold then it will feel cold even tho the a/c is off while you're waiting for the heat to kick in. I too have adjusted our registers so the air doesn't hit us in the face...rearranged our furniture too.

In the summer when it's 110.........68 indoors feels WONDERFUL
In the winter when it's 35.......68 indoors feels BRUTAL

Blast from the past! Our registers (as a young person) were in the floor and I use to have to lay my head on the register to dry my hair after it had been washed and set. Wow!! Takes me back.

Since the ducts are in the attic the air is the temperature of the attic which is pretty cold not of the room.It is a bit better today since we removed all the vent covers and repositioned the vents so they aren't blowing directly on us, which was a bit more challenging to do than it sounds.

I've noticed this at the pool. In the cooler weather they heat the water to 82 degrees and it is very nice and comfortable but in the summer they have to cool it to 82 and it feels much colder and uncomfortable.

My cousin is an HVAC guy and he says that the air handler is supposed to be in the middle of the house, but we have his and hers walk in closets and we think that the furnace space was sacrificed to put one of those in because that is something that people want these days.

I had to laugh at myself yesterday because I actually went and looked at my thermostat to see the temperature in my condo - I felt chilly and it had fallen to all of 70! The only way I'd ever see that temperature any other time would be to go visit a friend who keeps her house too cold for civilization!
No, I didn't switch on the heat; in fact, this season the only reason I know the heat is working is that I was here the day my A/C maintenance man tested it.
It;s days like this I am so happy to be a snowbird.

Our windows in this house are just terrible too.The builder grade ones and don't hold the temperature well. It is on our list of things we would like to do to replace the sliding doors and the windows.
