I have one of these gadgets I've used for years on my recliner.  QVC used to carry them but don't now.  It's very sturdy and I've never had accident with it.  Go to Amazon and put armchair tray in the search area.  This comes in many finishes and can be had for as little as $20.

Amazon.com.   Check out "ottoman tray" at Amazon.  They have quite a Variety including those with mirrored trays.

How about a copper tray?  I've seen several of them recently at places like Home Goods.  A hammered metal one would be pretty too!

I have a very casual home/decor with a lot of antiques  so I went antiquing to look for a tray and found a few. The one I kept is a weathered wood and looks like driftwood, which is perfect for my beach town home. It's on my coffee table with a mermaid statue, a conch shell with a mermaid carved on it  like a cameo and some shells and a little ceramic crab.
