Need help working with a skimpy comforter

I recently ordered a new comforter from Pottery Barn for my queen-size bed. It was on final sale, meaning I can't return it. I like the comforter and the shams, but what shocked me was how skimpy it is. My old Ralph Lauren comforter had a nice drape down both sides of the bed, but this new one is inches too short (in length and width).

One of my coworkers just bought a new king-size comforter at Target for her bed and also reported that it was much shorter. What's going on with these manufacturers?

My neighbor suggested buying a quilt or textured blanket in a shade that would coordinate with the comforter and using it as a full top layer, then folding the comforter back halfway so that the quilt or blanket showed. If I did this, I could rotate the comforter so that the length now becomes the width.

I just don't know how to make this work, so I'm hoping for suggestions. Thanks in advance!
