Re: Need an electric stove recommendation

I really hope that first and foremost you get that lovely condo but secondly I hope that induction is a method that would work for you.

Yesterday when I was frying the fish, I had a small kitchen towel I was using as a pot holder to hold the cast iron pot still and it was laying all over the "coil".  No need to worry about a fire, another good point in regards to induction.

Good luck sfnative!

Re: Need an electric stove recommendation

Have you heard back on the condo sale?  I hope you get it.

My mother should have gotten an induction stove top, but they ended up putting in an on demand water heater that is gas, so she got a gas top.  She is bad about burning stuff.  She  bronzed a tea kettle by leaving it on the stove to boil  dry while she got a shower.  She forgot about it.  It is perfectly bronzed from stainless steel.  She said it was glowing red when she got back to it.

She also burned up the embroidered pot holders I made for her by leaving them ont he burner.  it is a miracle that she hasn't burned down the house.  I was so praying for her to get the induction one.....now the dangers of gas and her cooking.  Good thing she doesn't cook much anymore.

In my area, they have "Meals on Wheels" . A nutrition program to help seniors get a hot meal each day.

Re: Need an electric stove recommendation

Don't buy a house that doesn't have a gas hook up in the kitchen. Tell your realtor it's a deal breaker. I would say if you really have no other option I'd go for the coils. I've used both and I really hate glass tops. Both coil and glass top stay hot for awhile once you are done cooking.

Thank you gardenman, kachina, tigriss and the first poster (sorry I've fotten your nic) for your advice.

This morning we went out with our agent to view a condo and are in the process of making an offer on it.  We didn't intend to purchase a condo, but it has 1,300 sq. ft. and 2 bathrooms, a dining room, breakfast room, plenty of kitchen cabinets and a humongous living room.  There is absolutely no gas line anywhere in this entire complex, so no possibility of us running a gas line into the condo, if we end up with this property.

It would seem, by all the advice thus far, that an induction stove is what I need.  Though I've no knowledge of them on board, nor do I know if I have any pots and pans that qualify as appropriate to cook with on that surface, will certainly look into such a unit.  We have two appliance stores in our city that offer factory re-build appliances at very attractive prices, that also come with a 6 month warranty, so will check to see if either of them has an induction stove.

Can any of you suggest a brand of cookware appropriate to use on an induction stove?  Thanks.

All Clad pans can be used on an induction range. I like looking for sale items to add to my collects. All-Clad lids will fit my super Steel pans. I

NutMeg3, Ma just turned 60. She did those things in her 50s. She is very ADD, now on meds, but can manage to ruin Ramen Noodles, if that is possible. I don't think we have that program in her town because it is very small and rural, but she wouldn't eat it anyway and neither would dad. They are southern through and through.

tigriss, you have my sympathies.  I went through this with my mom.  She never had dementia or alzheimers (thank God) but one time I got home and she had burned the top of the countertop because she put a screaming hot pot on it (she had formica countertops).  It was very much not like her and scared the daylights out of me.

She was very careful after that but I think it frightened her enough that she really didn't do much until I would get home (thank goodness).

It can be very challenging sometimes.  Smiley Sad

Re: Need an electric stove recommendation

You just have to pray she will stay safe in the kitchen.

Re: Need an electric stove recommendation

Thanks y'all. She is just forgetful like that. I just pray and let God handle it since I can't be there to cook for her and dad.
