Re: Nativity set (hand-carved)

@joannecha,

The love and care your father put into this set is priceless! You should write up the background and store it with the piece for posterity. What a memorable celebration of the "reason of the season".

Absolutely lovely!  What talent!  I'd keep this out all year on a shelf.

@joannecha

Thanks for sharing with us. What a beautiful keepsake you have.

I made my Mother a ceramic nativity set years ago. She would set it up every year on top of her console TV. When the TV died she no longer had any place to put it. (These things just don’t fit on the flat screen TVs). Anyhow, she gave it to me & I put it out yearly. I often wonder if my sons will ever use it after I’m gone.

OP here. Thank you all for the sweet comments. My Daddy was always a “whittled” but he started woodcarving when he retired. He did that along with taking communion to the shut-ins and writing stories about the history of our community right up until his death at 88. He was an inspiration to a lot of people in our town.

Re: Nativity set (hand-carved)

What a beautiful nativity!  I love the simple look of it...not that it was simple to make, not at all.  But I love the sweet simpleness of it.  It depicts how I imagine the real nativity to have been.  A lot of nativity sets are done in an ornate way, but I feel the innocence and warmth shine through in yours.

You must feel your father's spirit all around you when you look at it, thank you for sharing with us!   What a talent he had!   Merry Christmas!

Re: Nativity set (hand-carved)

What a treasure and keepsake.  You had a wonderful and talented father.  I agree with @ECBG.  I would find a permanent home for the Nativity - perhaps a glass front hutch, a shelf. curio cabinet, etc..  We keep our Angels out permanently, why not a special Nativity.. Altho The Nativity is the story of Christmas, its meaning is with us all the time.  No reason to only display at Christmas.  You could display it more front and center during the Christmas season and incorporate into your Christmas decorating, and after the Christmas season, return it to its permanent home.

I have several Nativity sets and they are too ornate to leave out, but if I had one that was special like yours, I could find a way to keep it on display.

I have several items that are considered Christmas items that remain on display all the time.  A small Lenox tree ornament on an etegre, white deer with red and green ribbons in a curio cabinet, angels in several places and a few other items.

You can't put a price on something like that. Thank you for sharing it with us.
