So whoever the first owner of this house was - they lived in the basement before building the A frame on top.  I believe the basement was built around 1960s, the upstairs in late 70s.  The kitchen cabinets are white metal (in perfect condition, my insurance man commented on how pristine they are).  The woman wallpapered the kitchen and laundry room.  The kitchen has like red and white teapots on it (very "Leave it to Beaver").  Today I bought paint for the kitchen (a goldenrod color) and started taking off the wallpaper - it's a big kitchen so it's gonna probably take me most of the summer to finish up.  Today I could get some large sheets to come off at a time - have three trash bags full of old wallpaper.  Tomorrow I will take my wallpaper steamer down there (oh yes,I have one because the woman also wallpapered the entire upstairs except the living room)  I have managed to take off and repaint all of upstairs).  It is my summer project.  I think the goldenrod will look nice against the white cabinets, stove and refrigerator.  I will buy some wall art once I get it all done.

@CareBears - I will definitely post before and afters once the project is done - I'll get down there and take pics so far and then post again when painting is done and new pictures hung.  I wish I had done that upstairs when I pulled wallpaper and painted all the rooms upstairs.  I actually just finished taking the wallpaper in my bedroom off a couple of years ago (last room upstairs with wallpaper - floral wallpaper), painted it a color called bagel, and put new bedding, window treatments.  Looks like a different room.

@hoosieroriginal....I love having projects to do!  I like to strip and restain or paint furniture, but I can't do a lot in the summer because of high heat and humidity.  We are having a heat wave right now so I am not doing anything outside except water my plants.

Yours is a large job....I love wall paper but taking it off is a job, I have done it many times....on the walls that are papered are you just going to paint or add some type of texture first?

You've got quite a project ahead of you!  The last time I took wallpaper down I swore I'd never use wallpaper ever again.  I hate taking it down.

@Mom2Dogs - just paint - got a flat paint.  It is cool down in the basement - probably 20 degrees cooler than upstairs - that's why I waited until it was this hot so I could work in the coolness of the basement.  Dogs are down there now during day because of the heat anyway.

You are living my dream.    My house was built in the early 70s but was decorated in the country style and there was wallpaper AND borders everywhere!    It took us a long time to take off the wallpaper because the drywall was not primed.   I used hot water in a spray bottle with barely a drop of fabric softener.    When taking off the paper, it almost pulled off the first layer of the drywall.

So I would work in one area, then move across the room, then back to the first section.    The wallpaper seemed to be 2 layers, the top layer with the design and the underlayer which was the glue part.    Have fun!!    Take pictures, we did.

Once you get that steamer going, that wallpaper will come off quickly. They were wallpaper crazy in the house I'm in now and I swear, I'm never putting it up again!

I had marigold kitchen walls in the first house we owned and remodeled.  Loved that cheerful kitchen.
