@VeneziaI'm also looking at flooring to replace carpet. Am interested in bamboo wood flooring since it is renewable, as well as ultimately would be allowed in a landfill (if necessary due to fire or other disaster). Have you looked into anything made of bamboo? I've found the color and width. Just need to get up my nerve to have my gorgeous, eight-year old Karastan carpeting removed. Not sure IT's old enough for the landfill. LOL

Edited: I plan to keep the carpeting in the daylight lower level (1200 sq. ft.) and perhaps in two bedrooms on the top floor. On the main floor, going back to hardwoods would be so easy to maintain. Haven't had a home with real hardwood floors for 30 years and miss them. Don't like the subfloor under the carpeting. Feels cheap to me even though the home is not.

Bamboo fades easily if there is any direct sunlight. If you have pets I would say absolutely not to get bamboo. Check out some of the new resilient floor planks that are out there. They are water proof and scratch proof. The high def ones look like hardwood.

Re: My new floors are in...yippee!!!!

@ceekay

we have a very small textured "popcorn" ceiling.  I really never noticed them UNTIL I saw my friend took hers down.  A very big mess, very costly to remove & honestly, IMO I prefer to spend my $ on something else.

I was very concerned then pleasantly surprised.  When the electrician removed these horrible track systems there was 1 electrical box and 3 small holes (the size of 2" just to put anchor thru I guess).

They used spackle to fill the holes & a cover plate to hide box that was removed.  Before my painter did the ceilings he came the evening before & used a spray texturing product to cover those "holes" & box.  Next day, he sprayed ceilings and you'd never know!

That's why personally I prefer to use a professional for jobs which some do themselves but I'm not handy that way when it comes to specialized things.

Tomorrow my electrician will do the new lighting in my utility room (pantry) it has a fluorescent light😮 and hallways have these weird little spot lights 🤔 who knows what purpose they serve!

@BirkiLady- I've never had bamboo floors, but a friend has.  When I visited her recently, it looked fine to me, but she said with two dogs, it scratches easily. Once she'd pointed it out, of course, I saw it!  It can be refinished (or polished, I think) but I'm not sure I'd go with it.  I want something durable that doesn't need a lot of maintenance.

I'm also keeping carpeting in the upstairs bedrooms.

Re: My new floors are in...yippee!!!!

@ptagirl- Thank you so much for the information!  It's hard not even knowing what questions to ask before you have something major like this done and I'm in a rural area, where good contractors don't exactly abound.

I'm definitely staying away from the big box home stores, as my friend had a nightmare when she chose one of those to do just one room.  I'll check out a couple of specialist stores, armed with the info you gave me.  I'd rather pay more and have a good experience, than to try to save a few dollars.

And I keep telling myself "it will be worth it"!

Re: My new floors are in...yippee!!!!

@ccassaday- Thank you.  We're rural and have a gravel drive.  In the winter especially, a lot of grit and dirt gets tracked in no matter how careful we are.  That's another reason the carpets are going.  I prefer to get recommendations from people on these forums, as I know it will be "real life" and not a salesman trying to sell a certain product.

I'll check out what you've suggested.

I, too, wanted to stay away from the big box stores...went with a local long-established flooring company..they charged a little more, but will guarantee the floor and the installation if anything pops up, discolors, etc.  I paid more to have them remove the carpet, but then I didn't have to mess with it and find a place to dispose of it.

My hubbie and I removed all the porcelain tile in the kitchen and in front of the livingroom door....What a mess!! ..If I had to do it over, I would pay for someone else to do it...dusty and a major pain to dispose of the pieces afterwards...those things shatter all over...glad we had bandaids available...

I am glad I decided to go with the vinyl planks, though...easy to take care of, look nice and so far wearing well....and much warmer on our feet and easier on my back than the tile...

The flooring company let us take several samples home to help us pick out a color....I went with the Dakota walnut because of it being neutral, classic and it goes with all my  furniture and cabinets... wanted a contrast, but not too much...we got the 5 inch planks...

As I previously stated, I will be having the same flooring installed in my office/craft room in two weeks...cannot wait to be rid of all the carpet in there, too..

Good luck in your search...and it Will be worth it in the end!...

Just beautiful, @homedecor1  The floors and the lighting both!

I love that you have a little breakfast nook at one end of your kitchen.  I think that always adds so much.
