I'll set the picture.  We just had our kitchen remodeled.  From the kitchen, we have one step and a landing going upstairs.  Turn right, steps to upstairs.  I want to have those steps carpeted along with hallway.  There is a wall between kitchen and stairs so you don't see the stairs.  So my idea was to have the landing and the one step all wood.  Some people say they think it would not look right.  I think it would look nice.  Any opinions, esp. if you may have tried it?

I have the scheme you have in mind in my living room. The steps going upstairs to the bedrooms and bath are carpeted. But the two steps up and the landing leading to the stairs match my parqueted living room floors and I left the steps and landing bare. Thus they are part of the living room and carpeted steps are not seen until you step up and turn at the landing. If you need a photo or two  I can attach.

I thoroughly agree not to carpet the step and landing seen from the kitchen. Just the unseen stairs carpeted will be comfortable and tasteful.

@rms1954  Agree 100% with @gizmogal.  That's the only way to go IMO

I think your idea would look nice too.  It is your house, do what you want. (writes someone who always asks everyone else their opinion, lol)

@Puppy Lips @mspatmac I feel so much better about my idea.  I'm gonna go with it.  The first nay-sayer was my husband, his usual response to my ideas is "you can't do that."  Even the carpet salesman at Lowes poo-pooed it.  The cabinet installer said he liked it, and he even gave me a couple other ideas.   Like I could match the stain on the wood for the landing and put a piece on top of the small wall right next to that first step which acts like a railing and finish it off with a nice bevel.  I hate that piece of wall and wanted it removed and just have a small wrought iron hand rail but that didn't fly.  So he suggested I "use my imagination" and that anything can be done.

It sounds lovely, I am sure you will like it.

A lot of the ways that the lip/edge of the tread/top is finished can leave a higher lip with a lower actual tread.  This is a dust catcher.  Think door jam right on the edge.

They do make curvearound combos of lip and tread.  A little pricey but much nicer.  Not in all colors.

I do not have the right words, but it is well worth checking out.

Do it your way. It seems like you are defining which part "goes" with the downstairs and which with the upstairs. I think it's a clever idea.

Re: My Idea For Stairs

[ Edited ]

I think it would look perfect, and is what I'd do. Although I might take the wood all the way up the stairs too since I don't like vacuuming carpeted stairs!

I wanted to do that but hubby said no, too dangerous.  He's worried about safety (his) LOL.

@rms1954 I would do what you are planning to do.
