We use our fireplace because it has gas logs that look real.  I, too, have asthma and have to be careful about candles.  Very few I can use so I know the ones.  I also know I cannot tolerate wood-burning logs so use the gas ones. They look so very real.

I tossed a throw over my leather chair to make it look warm and inviting.  My sofa always has a couple of pillows on it.  I also have a 5x8 area rug just as you enter the apt. which gives it a welcoming look.
