Re: Making A Baby Rag Quilt

[ Edited ]

@pattypeep....DH and I just found out we are going to be great grandparents again and I want to make a blanket.  I used to make quilts but I am not interested in making a traditional quilt so I thought RAG QUILT!

I have watched a couple of videos on how to make them but have a couple of questions.

Did you use 2 or 3 layers? and the backing..I cannot seem to get it thru my head.....is that 1 piece cut to size....I cannot even imagine it in my head!!

Can you give me a few tips?  Thanks

edited to fix typo.

@Mom2Dogs Hi. First question: the one I made for my grandaughter I bought the inner layer filling stuff that comes by the yard. Can't remember the name of it. That made it more quilt like. The one I made for my granddog I used three layers of flannel instead and it was more blanket like. Actually, I liked it better. The whole thing will be squares, front and back. If you use three layers of flannel, you will cut squares of everything. If you use the inner stuff, you will cut two squares of flannel and then squares (smaller than the flannel squares) and make "sandwiches". I chose to make the back of the blanket all the same in that I used the same color squares on the back of each "sandwich". Then I chose two other colors to make the design on the front.

@pattypeep....at what point did you add the backing?

I did see a u-tube video and the woman only used two layers of flannel and did not sew an X in the center of each square.

....and the binding, how are the edges of the blanket bound?

I need to go to a quilt shop and look at one...then I think I will be able to get it thru my brain!

@Mom2DogsThis was before the doggie blanket was finished, but wanted you to see these letters. I got them on Amazon from a place called Tricky Boo. They come from Switzerland, but only took a week to get. If you want to personalize you're blanket, these are really cute. They are iron on but I sewed them. I bought the first letter of my granddaughter's name on hers because I made the squares smaller and she has a long name. Heartblues blankie (768x1024).jpg

@pattypeep...cute blanket!  And so was the baby quilt photo you posted. Granddaughter ans a little boy so I am hoping for a girl this time.  I really like pink and I am itching to make a girley blanket...

I love, love fabric!  Sometimes I buy a yard just because I really like it but have no intentions of using it.  Thanks for the heads up on the web site, I will take a look.

@Mom2Dogs  The front, back, and inner pieces are all made at the same time. You will make "sandwiches" using all of the pieces, front, back, and inside. You will end up having a stack of these when all of your cutting is done. I did the cross stitching. I saw a video where they didn't and it made much more sense to cross stitch each "sandwich". That keeps everything together and then you can lay out your squares and find out what design suits your fancy. Once you find what you like, take a picture on your phone to keep as reference. You will sew all around the outside of the blanket when you are done. I sewed 5/8" all around twice. Then you will snip the outside edge just as you do for all of the other squares. There is no binding. It gives it a really cute look. Yes, if you can visit a quilt shop or even a specialty fabric store to see one in person. The store where I bought my first set of fabric had several displayed that were for sale. It really helps to see one up close and personal.

@pattypeep....got it!  Now I understand how the back is done.  For some reason I thought the back was 1 single piece.

I generally need a visual, so I will be making a trip to a fabric shop in a nearby town.  Thanks!

Some people finish the back and other just consider the finished seams sufficient for the back I did not put a back on the one I made and my girlfriend made one finished the same as mine.
