I remember when House Beautiful featured this clean, breeze-swept beach house on a wooded hill above the ocean, in 2012. It suits my mood right now. It's sort of industrial-nautical, rather than cute-nautical. What a fun seaside escape...
To me, the large pendant lights (reclaimed buoys!) and heavy nautical chain are the industrial touches that temper the whimsy of the Victorian sofa, Dutch door, and Louise Nevelson-inspired fireplace. I like the linen colored armchairs against all the white. (I like white upholstery too, but ONLY if it's slipcovers-- white is very do-able as seating, if you can whisk it off for washing after you've spilled, or the kitties have shed fur... These homeowners evidently don't worry about that...)
In the cheerful kitchen, classic beadboard, marble and vintage appliances... Oh, they mentioned that the white paint used everywhere in the house is Benjamin Moore's "Snow on the Mountain". That was a fun little fact for me, since all the trim in our living room is done in that paint color. It's a warm, creamy white, not quite as bright as it looks here (but definitely still reads as "white").
They have a special icebox-inspired frig--- love that.
Although just about 1600 sq. ft., the cottage manages to ramble down the hillside a bit-- so they turned that lower level into a comfy family room. The exposed area above the mantel is part of the house's foundation! This room is the reason they can have that pristine white upholstery in their "parlor" upstairs. Those beautifully rustic tables are big industrial baskets, upended.
The vintage touch of a pull-down schoolhouse map conceals the TV, and the winding staircase takes you back up to the main level.
Small master bedroom still has spacious vaulted ceiling and efficient built-ins.
The lucky kids have a bunk bed room!
...with nautical bathroom with lockers for their stuff, and stripped brass fixtures.
The guest room (for grown-ups), with Juliet balcony, and beautiful view down the hillside toward the water.
The back of the shingled house with deck.
I just can't imagine having this ocean vista as your daily view.... Stunning and dreamlike!

I do like this home especially the kitchen and guest bedroom. The living room is very bright and spacious but I wouldn't have so much white especially with the furnishings. But all in all is has much appeal and would be a lovely vacation home. The views are spectacular!

I would vacation here....but wouldn't want to live here. It's very nicely done but just isn't my style

I really like the house as a getaway cottage. Except the white sofa. it's the kind of thing that looks good the day it arrived, and it is downhill from there.

I grew up in Marin, so would see homes like this as I drove around with my parents, or in later years when I'd go back to Marin, old enough to drive myself.
I never did get to see inside any homes quite like this, although I did get to spend a fair amount of time looking at or on beaches. Tide pools were a particular favorite of my family's.
I rather like their pictures within a frame idea. And the icebox/refrigerator is next to an old phone and an old-style radio. It all seems to fit the mood perfectly.

Love this. When can I move in?

Stunning view! Too much white inside for me.

Love everything about it, especially the retro touches in the kitchen.
