How influenced are you by a house's setting? Would you still like this house (if you do), if you didn't know the rolling Pacific was right outside:
Michael S. Smith is a decorator well known for his polished, luxe, often traditional interiors. But I like what he did here. And I realized I liked it regardless if it was a beach house or not. Feels warm, "easy", and comfortable to me.
It might be all the soothing pale wood-- that always relaxes me, for some reason. Love it on a ceiling too.
This "gallery" is so graphic, with the sun slatting through! Almost painterly.
It might be all the different textures, too. The carved wood of the front of that console almost has an intricate "tribal" texture.
Airy staircase.
This bedroom feels cozy to me. I'm one of those people who love both abstract art, and traditional art, equally, but for this room I might have selected a slightly less 'vigorous' abstract, ha.
I will admit, this bathroom is hard to divorce from its superlative coastal setting and million dollar view. But even if it opened on a small back yard (with lots of privacy afforded by curtains of course), it'd be a nice bathroom....
I realize what this reminds me a little of-- the famously "cool" midcentury living room that Judy Garland and James Mason have in their "A Star is Born" house. They had a much longer, lower, exaggerated fireplace, of course. But similar feeling. There's a little of Joan Crawford's Fifties' modern house in "Female on the Beach" too....
Yup, winter's getting to me!

Well...all a bit too modern for my real life taste...which is more eclectic, some old, some new, more feminine, french country, coastal cottage ...lol...which if you can figure all that out you might get the picture.
All that said...I do love fireplaces like this, and mine is the same...while I admire how everyone gets to decorate their mantles, especially this time of year....I just never could get rid of my plain flat wall....so I like that...I like the kitchen island setting for a "visit"...not what I would pick for my all the time kitchen. (I love again, more farmhouse, cottage kitchens.)
So where I "landed" in all this was...YES to the patio, setting, and YES to please let me retreat there for about 3 months, NOW! Thank you. The End.
oh...ps. pop the Prosecco and join me out on the deck at sunset.
sigh...I think we all need to "get outta Dodge" about now....I know I definitely do. ![]()

The Pacific ocean outside my door would certainly be a very big lure for moving into this home. I am not a fan of such an open look however, I do have to have privacy. There are furnishings I am not fond of and the art work isn't appealing. I love all the wood which gives the house feeling and warmth. I would have to make cosmetic changes but that ocean is calling me!!!!!

A little too beige and hotel influence for me, but I loved the bath. More appeal than other structures I've seen.

If looking for a home for me the furnishings have no bearing on my decision. I look at how I could adjust it to how my family lives and if we would "fit" into it. Type of setting is dependent on finances, stage of life, single, married, kids etc. Am I looking for my first or forever home? No easy answer IMO.
I love the home and dislike the furnishings. These hi end designers spend a fortune staging or decorating these home, and very few can I relate to at any stage of my life.

I think the style and furnishings fit the setting. I like it very much but I don't think I would want it as my permanent home. I can only handle modern in moderation.

I love the house itself; the decor is a little bland for me....some of it I like a lot and some I don't. However, if I had that view I could certainly move right in and make plans to renovate at a later time.

I'd like it better if it weren't by the ocean!!

It is beautiful and breathtaking, but not for me as a permanent home, but would love it as a vacation home for sure! It is very modern!
