I guess it takes all kinds of personalities to please the viewing audience. I much prefer Hilary to that sugary sweetness girl on Home Town. I change the channel when I see her. There was a thread recently by people who love her show.

My sis boss did that show in Toronto.
There actually is NO list it. Your contract is you play along and pay for a GOOD portion of the Reno bill and staging.
Nothing prohibits you from selling down the road, but all the house showings of new properties are staged.
All drama for TV and Hillary was actually rarely at the project.
At least that was the gig for him back when he was on...it was several years ago.

@RespectLife That's very interesting but not really surprising. I find Hillary and Christina Hall to be the best designers on HGTV. I hope Hillary really does do the design even if she's not at the project that often. Do you know about that?

I only watch the shows where the work is done on an older home and the improvements really make a difference in the living conditions for the family.
I do not watch the shows where the work is simply an update to make a pretty kitchen, bathroom, or entertaining space, which has been the trend since the filming has been done around the Raleigh-Durham area of NC.

@NickNack We seem to have the same viewing taste. Christina and Hillary are my two favorite designers as well. I think both are involved in the initial design and responsible for the concept. I suspect contractors and design assistants are there for the day to day implementation. I like to listen to their comments on their visits to the site. They often use phrases like not as much storage as I expected, not enough natural light, etc., that indicate infrequent visits. They make necessary adjustments and move forward. I think they are there for the final implementation of the design.

According to my sis' boss, he only saw/met Hilary 1-2 times at best.
There was a head designer he worked with...not really sure if the ideas came from her or Hilary...or if Hilary sent it in...approved it etc.
While I don't care for either Hilary or Christina's TV 'personas'...I also like 'their' designs the best !! More my style.
I think Joanna and Erin seem so sweet and genuine, but their style is just not me.
I watch anyways cuz I think they are both so cute!

I rarely stop and watch Love It or List It.
Awhile ago I watched an episode that bothered me. It made me not care to watch.
The male of the household spent most of his time complaining about how he hated the house. He was only interested in paying a minimum amount to renovate it because he hated it so much.
He acted like Hilary was trying to scam him out of his money. Then as they were renovating the house the Contractor found quite a leak in the roof. Hilary asked for more money for a new roof and the owner of the house didn't want to give her a penny more. Hilary said that the leak was so bad that the homeowner had to have known about it.
I was surprised this episode aired. The verbal exchange between the homeowner and Hilary was contentious.
It made me wonder why the homeowner bought the house in the first place, if he did not like anything about it. And he wanted the house redesigned and someone else do all the work. And he would have to put out as little money as possible.
I can't help but think that there is a contract between the show and the homeowner before any filming and work is done. And a leaky roof would have been inquired about in the contract. Maybe the homeowner "forgot" to mention it?

@RespectLife - ALL of these "reality" shows are scripted! My sister-in-law's niece (on her husband's side) participated in one of the "choose one of the three houses we show you" shows. She had already BOUGHT the house; the show added two more, so she could "choose" one! LOL!
They're fun to watch!
About Hilary: She is involved in dog rescue groups, including one run by a Canadian friend in India. My sister-in-law contacted her and now has a sweet pup from there. She had to wait almost a year for everything to be worked out, but he got "home" right before Christmas. We haven't met him yet, but we've seen lots of pictures! ![]()

@beach-mom My husband is friends with a couple that found a place to rent in another country and was on that show of picking one of three places to live. They had already picked a place before they even made the show. I have watched "Love it or List it" many times. But, I get tired of seeing other people get their dream homes. I have a very nice house myself, but, you know, there is always something better out there, lol.

@Puppy Lips - I know what you mean! I look at all of these beautiful homes and try to imagine living in them. Some of them I wouldn't want to though!
I learned a long time ago "reality" shows aren't real! Not that long ago DD met one of the stars of Jersey Shore. He said, "You do know these shows are scripted, right?" She did know. ![]()
