Looking for smart thermostat recs?

I need a smart thermostat that will send an alert if the temperature in the home drops below 50 degrees. We have a home in a cold part of the country and are away for weeks at a time. Anyone use one with that function? I'm reading up on them, but it's always nice to read about personal experiences! Thanks!

@Marybella

I wanted to buy one last year but I changed my mind. I did do some research and found a couple of options, both were Honeywell. I don't think you can go wrong with that brand. I also would like to recommend this website, CNET dot com, for their picks for 2020. Search:

"Best smart thermostat for 2020

Start here if you're considering a thermostat upgrade."

We have a Nest Thermostat. I bought it so I could control heat/air while sleeping.

I do know on the Nest you can set it on Home Away on Eco Mode. If you don't like the temperatures it has set for summer & winter eco mode you can change it to what you like. You can set it for 50° for winter if that's what you want.

You can download the app to see what it's set on, make changes etc. It does show temperature in house & outside.

Found this on howtogeek

Thankfully, thanks to a neat online service called IFTTT, you can receive notifications on your phone whenever your Nest Thermostat senses that the indoor temperature has dipped below or risen above what it’s set at. So if you set your air conditioning to 74 degrees and your Nest Thermostat reports that it’s 78 degrees in your house, that’s a telltale sign that something is wrong.

I have no clue what IFTTT is.

@Nightowlz Thanks. I took a look at how to geek and read that the Ecobee smart thermometer has a "native" ability to send alerts, unlike  needing the IFTTT add-on. I'm going to research that one.

Re: Looking for smart thermostat recs?

We tried to install one in our home but found out we don't have the correct wiring and an electrician would be needed.  At that point we went with a Not so Smart (LOL) thermostat.  The cost of the electrician outweighed our need to have a Smart thermostat.

Re: Looking for smart thermostat recs?

I looked at a few that work with your wifi and the reviews talked about if your wifi goes out, it either leaves it on or leaves it off and doesn't reset.

I ended up just with a digital programmable one, similar to what I had originally installed 27 years ago, but the digits are smaller now, so I have to install a hook for my readers so I can see what the heck it says LOL

I did not think of any of that before buying the Nest thermostat or Ring Doorbell Pro. They both worked with our wiring plus Internet speed.

Re: Looking for smart thermostat recs?

We have the "Honeywell smart 7 day programmable with WiFi" thermostat in 2 homes.  We've been very happy with them and are very easy to use.  Even though I wanted the Nest, I'd recommend the Honeywell!

Our Nest works as a regular thermostat if internet is down.

Ring Doorbell does not work if internet is down but that's not a problem for us. We don't usually have issues with internet going down.
